Airbus, Tata Group to Revolutionize Helicopter Manufacturing in India

In a significant boost to indigenous manufacturing, Airbus Helicopters and the Tata Group have joined hands to set up a final assembly line (FAL) for helicopters in India. This marks a major milestone in promoting self-reliance and bolstering the country's aerospace ecosystem.

FAL to Produce Airbus H125 Helicopters

The FAL will primarily focus on producing Airbus H125 helicopters, a versatile civil range aircraft. These helicopters will cater to both the domestic market and neighboring countries, expanding India's export capabilities.

AatmaNirbhar Bharat Gets a Boost

The establishment of this facility aligns with the Indian government's AatmaNirbhar Bharat initiative, emphasizing self-reliance and reducing dependence on imports. It represents a significant step towards achieving indigenous manufacturing prowess in the helicopter sector.

First Private Sector Helicopter Manufacturing Facility

This collaboration marks the first instance of a private sector player setting up a helicopter manufacturing facility in India. Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL), a subsidiary of the Tata Group, will spearhead the project in partnership with Airbus Helicopters.

FAL to be Operational in 24 Months

The FAL is expected to be fully operational within the next 24 months, with the first Made in India H125s scheduled for delivery in 2026. The location of the facility will be jointly determined by Airbus and the Tata Group.

Creating Diverse Job Opportunities

Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia hailed the partnership as a historic moment, emphasizing its potential to generate diverse job opportunities and boost the economy. The project is expected to create a ripple effect, fostering growth and development in the aerospace sector.

Comprehensive Assembly and Testing

The FAL will undertake a range of tasks, including the integration of major component assemblies, avionics, and mission systems. It will also handle the installation of electrical harnesses, hydraulic circuits, flight controls, and other essential components. Additionally, the facility will conduct testing, qualification, and delivery of the H125 helicopters to customers in India and the region.

Revolutionizing Transportation and Services

Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury expressed his belief that the Made-in-India civil helicopter will revolutionize passenger and goods transportation. It will also cater to various segments such as emergency medical services, disaster management, law enforcement, tourism, and aerial work missions.

Unlocking the Potential of the Indian Market

Faury reaffirmed Airbus' commitment to developing the entire spectrum of the aerospace ecosystem in India. He highlighted that this FAL is the second final assembly line Airbus is building in the country, following the Make in India C295 military aircraft manufacturing facility in Vadodara, Gujarat.

Tata Group Delighted to Partner

Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran expressed the Tata Group's delight in establishing India's first helicopter assembly facility in the private sector. He emphasized that the facility will assemble the world's bestselling Airbus H125 single-engine helicopter for both domestic and export markets.

Enhancing Regional Connectivity

The H125 helicopters are expected to play a crucial role in providing last-mile connectivity to remote areas, aligning with the government's regional connectivity scheme UDAN. This will further boost tourism and enhance the overall accessibility of the country.

In a social media post, Scindia highlighted the partnership's potential to empower the Make in India initiative and create diverse employment opportunities. He also emphasized its significance in unlocking the potential of the Indian aerospace sector and strengthening Indo-France relations.
