The national transporter across its 700-1050 stations is considering levying nominal user charges for generating additional revenues. Earlier the railways was mulling levy of such charges on passengers using 50 modernised stations.
Amitabh Kant, Niti Aayog CEO, on Thursday the idea is to offer 50 stations for modernization. And a pre-decided and nominal user charge will be notified and shall be amount to a big burden on travelers. "We are looking at a close to ₹1 trillion investment. RFQ (request for qualification) for 10 stations have been floated. Eight stations (including Gwalior and Surat) received overwhelming participation (from private investors)," Kant said at a virtual press conference.
And so, this airport like user fee will be charged for railway stations based on footfalls and not shall be restricted just to modern stations.
