Alberta Premier Danielle Smith Rejects Energy Shipment Restrictions to US Amid Tariff Threats

The Premier of Alberta, Danielle Smith, has expressed her opposition to halting energy exports to the United States. This stance comes in response to President-elect Donald Trump's threats of imposing a 25% tariff on Canadian goods. During a news conference in Florida, following her visit to Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort, Smith emphasised that Alberta would not support such measures.

Smith highlighted the importance of maintaining a strong trade relationship with the US. "We buy a lot of goods from the US, more than any other jurisdiction," she stated. She stressed the need for a tariff-free relationship for mutual benefit. Alberta, which owns significant oil and gas resources, plays a crucial role in this dynamic.

Canada's Energy Exports and Trade Relations

Alberta exports approximately 4.3 million barrels of oil daily to the US, contributing to nearly a quarter of America's oil consumption. The US Energy Information Administration reports that the country consumes about 20 million barrels daily while producing around 13.2 million barrels domestically. Canada remains the top export destination for 36 US states.

Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly mentioned the possibility of an energy embargo in response to Trump's tariff threats. However, Smith warned against cutting pipeline supplies through Michigan, as it would disrupt key supplies to Ontario and Quebec. "We should talk about things that we actually can do," she advised.

Potential Retaliatory Measures and Political Concerns

In light of Trump's tariff threats, Canadian officials are considering retaliatory tariffs on American products like orange juice and steel. Smith also expressed concern over Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's resignation, which has led to a leadership race and potential federal election in spring. She believes this situation weakens Canada's negotiating position with Trump.

Smith has been actively engaging with US officials and media to strengthen diplomatic ties. She will attend Trump's inauguration next week as part of her efforts to maintain open communication channels. Her recent diplomatic activities underscore the importance of collaboration between Canada and the US amidst these challenges.
