New Metro Rule: In a move aimed at improving commuter safety and enforcing discipline, the Kolkata Metro will begin imposing a fine of Rs 250 on passengers who cross the yellow safety line on station platforms starting June 1, 2025.
Kolkata Metro to Impose Rs 250 Fine From June 1
The Kolkata Metro on Monday announced that, from 1 June, passengers who unnecessarily cross the 'yellow' safety line on platforms along the Dakshineswar-New Garia corridor will be fined Rs 250. In an official statement, metro authorities stated that the fine is intended to enhance passenger safety and encourage responsible behaviour on platforms.

"It has been found that a section of commuters unnecessarily crosses the yellow line when there is no train at the station in spite of repeated requests. In order to curb this tendency, Metro Railway authorities have now decided to launch a special drive against the erring commuters," the metro authorities announced.
"Unnecessarily crossing the yellow line will be considered a nuisance activity in the Metro station premises and will attract a penalty of Rs 250 from June 1," it added.
The yellow line, marked clearly along the edge of every metro platform, is intended to keep passengers at a safe distance from the tracks. However, metro authorities say that despite repeated announcements and warnings, many commuters ignore the safety boundary, putting themselves and others at risk. Such behaviour can not only lead to accidents but may also disrupt train services.
To curb this growing safety concern, Kolkata Metro officials have classified the act of stepping beyond the yellow line as "creating nuisance," a punishable offense under metro regulations. Dedicated monitoring teams will be deployed across stations to conduct regular checks and enforce the rule.
Public opinion on the new rule has been mixed. While many commuters support the measure as a necessary step toward safer metro travel, others believe the Rs 250 fine is excessive. Nonetheless, metro authorities maintain that strict enforcement is essential to ensure safety and prevent hazardous behavior on platforms.
"I understand the need for safety, but Rs 250 feels like a heavy penalty for just stepping over a line," said Priya Sharma, a daily commuter on the North-South corridor. On the other hand, many agree with the strict approach. "People don't take warnings seriously unless there's a consequence. This fine might finally make them follow the rules," added Rajesh Das, another regular passenger.
To help people adjust and raise awareness, the Kolkata Metro has rolled out a comprehensive information campaign. You will now hear extra announcements at stations reminding commuters to stay behind the yellow line.
Posters and digital screens are also being used to get the message across. Metro staff have even started speaking directly to passengers, explaining why the rule has been introduced and how it can prevent dangerous accidents.
