As the H-1B visa, a temporary nonimmigrant visa program undergoes significant changes, major United States (US)-based companies, including Amazon, Tesla, and several others, have emerged as the biggest beneficiaries for 2024. The data from the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) highlights the extent of reliance these companies have on foreign skilled labor to fuel their growth and innovation.
Biggest Beneficiaries Of H-1B Visa Program:
In 2024, Amazon retained its top position with 9,265 H-1B visa approvals, reinforcing its dominance as the largest employer of H-1B workers. Tesla also featured prominently in the list, alongside other leading technology giants such as Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Apple. These companies secured thousands of H-1B visas, essential for filling specialized roles within engineering, research, and development fields-critical to their global competitiveness.

The top ten US companies benefiting from H-1B visa approvals in 2025 include:
Amazon Com Services LLC: 9,265 approvals
Cognizant Technology Solutions: 6,321 approvals
Google LLC: 5,364 approvals
Meta Platforms Inc: 4,844 approvals
Microsoft Corporation: 4,725 approvals
Apple Inc: 3,873 approvals
HCL America Inc: 2,953 approvals
IBM Corporation: 2,906 approvals
Walmart Associates: 2,904 approvals
Capgemini America: 2,795 approvals
What Role Do Indian IT Companies Play?
Indian-origin IT firms have continued to play a dominant role in the H-1B visa landscape for 2024. Infosys led the pack with 8,140 H-1B visa approvals, followed by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) with 5,274 approvals. Other significant players include HCL America (2,953 approvals), Wipro (1,634 approvals), and Tech Mahindra (1,199 approvals). This trend reflects the strong global demand for skilled IT professionals, particularly from India, to fill critical roles in US-based tech companies.
What Is H-1B Visa?
The H-1B is a temporary (nonimmigrant) visa that allows US employers to hire highly skilled foreign professionals for specialty occupations that typically require at least a bachelor's degree or its equivalent. These positions often exist in fields like engineering, mathematics, technology, and medical sciences. The visa is generally issued for three years and can be extended for a maximum of six years.
For an employer to file a petition with the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), they must first ensure the hiring of a foreign worker will not harm US workers. This requires the employer to submit a labor condition application (LCA) to the Department of Labor (DOL), attesting that hiring a foreign worker will not adversely affect the wages and working conditions of similarly employed US workers.
According to the American Immigration Council, the current yearly statutory cap is 65,000 visas, with an additional 20,000 visas available for foreign professionals who have earned a master's degree or doctorate from a US institution of higher learning (Figure 1). The fiscal year (FY) 2025 ceiling was achieved on December 2, 2024.
What Is H-1B Visa's Importance For US Companies?
The H-1B visa program allows US companies to fill highly specialized positions that may not be readily filled by the domestic workforce. Fields like engineering, research and development (R&D), and technology require skilled workers that are in high demand globally. For US-based companies like Amazon, Tesla, and others, H-1B visas are essential for maintaining their global competitiveness, supporting technological innovation, and ensuring sustained economic growth.
What Are Recent Changes In H-1B Visa Program?
A notable change in the H-1B visa landscape has come from the US Department of Labor, which has started deleting older H-1B and visa records from the Foreign Labor Application Gateway (FLAG) system after five years. This move has rendered older visa case data inaccessible, posing challenges for applicants and legal representatives who may need these records for legal or employment purposes.
With the continued reliance of major tech companies on the H-1B visa program, these changes underscore its essential role in supporting the workforce needs of both US and Indian tech giants. As the H-1B program evolves, it will likely continue to shape the employment landscape, fostering collaboration across borders and driving innovation.
