Preparations have begun for the annual Ambubachi Mela 2026 at Kamakhya Temple, one of the largest and most spiritually significant religious gatherings in northeastern India. Authorities are expecting lakhs of devotees, tantriks, sadhus and pilgrims to arrive in Guwahati during the annual festival, which transforms the Nilachal Hills into a major centre of faith, tantra and spiritual rituals.
Temple authorities, along with the district administration, have already begun planning security arrangements, crowd management, sanitation, accommodation and transport facilities ahead of the four-day event.

Ambubachi Mela will begin on the night of June 22 and conclude at sunrise on June 26. Members of the temple's Doloi community said the festival starts on the seventh day of the Assamese month of Ahaar, when devotees believe Goddess Kamakhya enters her annual menstrual phase.

During the three-day observance, the sanctum sanctorum of Kamakhya Temple remains closed to devotees as part of centuries-old rituals linked to fertility, womanhood and the creative power of nature in the Shakta tradition of Hinduism. The temple doors reopen on the fourth day after purification ceremonies, drawing huge crowds seeking darshan and blessings.
Mahakumbh of the East: Ambubachi Mela in Kamakhya Devi Mandir, Guwahati, Assam
Several sadhus and ascetics have already started arriving in Guwahati ahead of the mela, while temporary camps, religious gatherings, tantric rituals and spiritual discourses are expected to continue throughout the four-day event. Often referred to as the "Mahakumbh of the East", the festival attracts followers from across Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and several other parts of the country every year.
Authorities are introducing a major route change for Ambubachi Mela 2026 to handle the expected rush more efficiently. Along with the existing Nursery route, devotees will now also be able to access the temple through a newly developed road from the Pandu side. Officials believe the additional entry route will help reduce congestion around Nilachal Hills during peak pilgrimage hours.
Security arrangements are also being strengthened with plans to install advanced CCTV cameras around the temple complex and nearby areas. Police deployment, crowd-monitoring systems, medical teams, sanitation workers and emergency response units are expected to remain active round-the-clock during the mela period.
A major attraction during Ambubachi Mela is the distribution of sacred red cloth pieces associated with Goddess Kamakhya. Devotees believe these cloths carry the spiritual energy and blessings of the goddess and preserve them as holy symbols in homes and places of worship.
With railway stations, roads and hotels in Guwahati expected to witness heavy footfall closer to the festival dates, authorities are likely to issue detailed travel advisories, traffic plans and special transport arrangements in the coming weeks for smoother pilgrim movement across the city.
