AM/NS India steel plant in Andhra Pradesh backed by PM Narendra Modi, production planned for 2029

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the AM/NS India project as a world-class integrated steel plant that will strengthen India’s steelmaking. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu laid the foundation in Anakapalli district. Phase 1 investment of Rs 70,000 crore targets 8.2 MTPA, with production expected in early 2029 and about 100,000 jobs.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday described the Rs 1.35 lakh crore AM/NS India project as a "world-class integrated steel plant\". Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the facility will add to India’s steelmaking strength. The ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India plant is planned for Nakkapalli mandal in Anakapalli district.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu laid the foundation for the project. Union Steel and Heavy Industries Minister HD Kumaraswamy also attended the event. Global steel industry leaders Lakshmi Mittal and Aditya Mittal were among those present at the foundation ceremony.

\"This is a world-class integrated steel plant that will further strengthen Indias steelmaking capabilities. It marks a major milestone in Andhra Pradeshs development journey and will create opportunities for youth while positioning the state as a hub of industrial innovation,\" an official release, quoting PM Modi said.

The official release also said the project will help improve India’s standing in global steel manufacturing. The release added that the plan aims to support India’s position as a leading steel-making country. The project was presented as part of Andhra Pradesh’s wider industrial development effort.

AM/NS India project phases and steel plant capacity

The AM/NS India project will be built in stages. Phase 1 involves an investment of Rs 70,000 crore. This stage targets a capacity of 8.2 million tonne per annum. The developers said this will make it India’s largest greenfield steel plant.

The plant is expected to start producing steel by the first quarter of 2029. Project details estimate around one lakh direct and indirect jobs. The employment figure is linked to both plant operations and allied activities. The planned jobs are expected to support livelihoods and local economic growth.
