Apple's $14 Billion iPhone Assembly In India Signals 'Make In India' Success

Apple Inc. has reported the assembly of iPhones worth an impressive $14 billion within India's borders during the fiscal year 2024. According to a report by Bloomberg News, this development underscores Apple's growing commitment to diversifying its production base and leveraging India's burgeoning capabilities in the electronics manufacturing space.

Apple's decision to manufacture in India has yielded substantial results, with the country now contributing approximately 14% of its flagship iPhone production. This translates to roughly one in every seven iPhones being assembled in India, marking a remarkable achievement in the nation's 'Make in India' initiative.

The assembly process was predominantly led by Foxconn, one of Apple's key manufacturing partners, which accounted for nearly 67% of the total production volume. Pegatron Corp., another significant player in Apple's supply chain, played a pivotal role by contributing approximately 17% to the India-made iPhones. Additionally, Wistron Corp.'s plant in Karnataka, under the stewardship of the Tata Group, played a crucial role in completing the remaining production quota.

Apple's strategic move to ramp up production in India comes amid escalating geopolitical tensions between China and the United States. While China remains the largest iPhone manufacturing hub globally, Apple's increased focus on India reflects its proactive approach to diversifying its supply chain and mitigating risks associated with geopolitical uncertainties.

In a related development, Reuters reported on Monday that Pegatron is engaged in advanced discussions to transfer control of its sole iPhone manufacturing facility, located near Chennai in Tamil Nadu, to the Tata Group. This strategic realignment underscores Tata Group's growing prominence in India's electronics manufacturing landscape and its alignment with Apple's long-term objectives in the region.

Furthermore, the Tata Group's plans to construct another manufacturing facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, with Pegatron as a potential joint venture partner, signal a concerted effort to bolster India's position as a hub for electronics manufacturing. This collaborative endeavour not only enhances India's attractiveness as an investment destination but also promotes technology transfer and job creation, driving socio-economic development in the region.

Apple's increased manufacturing activities in India are expected to yield significant benefits, including increased investments, technological advancement, and employment generation. The 'Make in India' initiative, championed by the Indian government, receives a substantial boost from Apple's sizable production activities, positioning India as a formidable player in the global electronics supply chain.

Apple's assembly of $14 billion worth of iPhones in India during fiscal year 2024 represents a significant milestone in the nation's journey towards becoming a global manufacturing powerhouse. This achievement not only underscores India's growing prominence in the tech manufacturing landscape but also sets the stage for deeper collaboration between global tech giants and India's vibrant manufacturing ecosystem, fostering inclusive growth and prosperity.
