Apple AI features highlight privacy focus at WWDC as Tim Cook nears retirement

Apple used WWDC to introduce new AI features designed around privacy and everyday use, integrating tools across devices and apps. The event also marked Tim Cook’s final developers conference before he hands over the CEO role to John Ternus in September, following a 15-year tenure that lifted Apple’s value by more than USD 4 trillion.

Apple introduced new artificial intelligence tools at its annual developers conference on Monday. Apple placed privacy and everyday use at the centre of the update. The event was the final World Wide Developers Conference led by CEO Tim Cook. Tim Cook is due to hand over leadership to John Ternus in September.

The iPhone maker has lagged behind key rivals in AI progress. Apple tried to stand apart by highlighting a privacy-first plan. Apple also said AI would work across devices and apps. The leadership change arrived as AI reshaped the tech sector. The shift has been the biggest since the first iPhone launch in 2007.

Apple aimed to improve its position after problems with earlier AI plans. Apple had struggled to release AI-based upgrades it had promised. Those features were first outlined nearly two years ago. Monday’s announcements were meant to show steadier delivery. Apple also tied its approach to protecting user data across its ecosystem.

The World Wide Developers Conference opened on Monday at Apple’s Silicon Valley headquarters. The gathering drew thousands of developers from about 65 countries. The conference centred on software, not new phone launches. Apple usually saves iPhone hardware updates for its fall event. Developers used the week to review platform changes and tools.

Apple CEO Tim Cook transition to John Ternus

Tim Cook announced retirement plans in April. The move ended a 15-year stretch as CEO. During that period, Apple’s market value rose by more than USD 4 trillion. The rise came during an era shaped by iPhone sales. The planned handover marked a major moment for Apple’s direction and leadership.

John Ternus has worked at Apple for about 25 years. John Ternus has led engineering for the iPhone, iPad and Mac. John Ternus has held that role for the past five years. The position placed John Ternus close to Apple’s core products. That experience made John Ternus a leading choice to replace Tim Cook.

Tim Cook received a long standing ovation from the audience. Tim Cook then said, "I am deeply grateful to have been on this journey with you\". Tim Cook also said, \"the energy around Apple platforms has never been stronger.\" The conference marked Tim Cook’s final time leading the annual event. The handover to John Ternus is expected in September.
