Apple and CERT-In: Unraveling the Mystery of Warning Notifications

In response to the warning notifications sent to several opposition leaders in India, an Apple cybersecurity team met with the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) on Thursday, December 7, to discuss the matter.

Apple's Response to CERT-In Notice

Last month, opposition leaders, including Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, Shashi Tharoor, Pawan Khera, K C Venugopal, Supriya Shrinate, T S Singhdeo, and Bhupinder S Hooda, as well as Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, CPIM general secretary Sitaram Yechury, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, Shiv Sena UBT MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, Aam Aadmi Party's Raghav Chadha, AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi, and some aides of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, received alerts from Apple warning them of state-sponsored attackers attempting to remotely compromise their iPhones. In response to these allegations, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Meity Rajeev Chandrasekhar stated that Apple must respond to the notice issued by CERT-In, which requires the involvement of their global cybersecurity team.

Meeting Between Apple Team and CERT-In

The Apple team was scheduled to meet with CERT-In by the end of November, and the meeting has since taken place. The outcome of the meeting is that CERT-In is now responsible for submitting a report based on its findings. There is no specified deadline for the submission of this report, and CERT-In will provide it once their investigation is complete.

The meeting between the Apple cybersecurity team and CERT-In is a significant step in addressing the concerns raised by opposition leaders regarding the warning notifications they received. The report from CERT-In will shed light on the matter and provide further clarity on the situation.
