Apple seeks exemption for old iPhone models from uniform charging port rule in India

Apple has sought exemption for some of the old iPhone models that are being sold in India from the mandatory shift to uniform charging port rule. The company has shifted to USB C-type charging port from iPhone 15 onwards but it will be difficult to change the design of some of the old iPhone models that are being made in India.

New Delhi: Smart devices maker Apple has reportedly sought exemption for some of its older iPhone models that are being sold in India from the mandatory shift to a uniform charging port rule. The company has already transitioned to a USB C-type charging port from iPhone 15 onwards, but its representatives have expressed concerns about the difficulty in changing the design of older models that are still being manufactured in India.

Difficulties in Design Changes

According to industry sources, Apple has no objection to adopting a uniform charging port and has already implemented it in its latest iPhone models. However, the company's representatives have requested an exemption for some of the older iPhones that are being made in India. The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, explained that it would be challenging for Apple to alter the design of these legacy devices.

Government's Push for Uniform Charging Port

The Consumer Affairs Ministry in India has proposed introducing a uniform charging port for all electronic devices to benefit consumers and reduce e-waste. This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) mission, which was launched at COP-26. The government aims to implement this regulation by June 2025.

Industry Support for Uniform Charging Port

The industry body India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) has expressed its full support for the government's efforts to implement a uniform charging port regulation in India. ICEA Chairman Pankaj Mohindroo stated that the mobile phone industry has already adopted the Type-C USB port for charging, and 100% of new models launched and sold in India are equipped with this port. He further mentioned that ICEA is working with the Ministry of Electronics & IT (MeitY) to ensure a smooth transition for all notified products, including mobile phones, laptops, and tablets.

Apple's request for exemption for older iPhone models from the uniform charging port rule in India highlights the challenges companies may face in adapting to new regulations. While the government's push for a uniform charging port aims to reduce e-waste and promote consumer convenience, it remains to be seen how Apple will address the concerns regarding the design changes required for its older devices.
