Counting of votes for the 2026 Assembly elections began at 8:00 AM on Monday, May 4 across West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala and the Union Territory (UT) of Puducherry. Early updates between 9:00 and 9:30 AM suggest a closely fought electoral battle across multiple regions, although official Election Commission figures are still awaited as postal ballot counting continues.

The counting exercise started with postal ballots, followed by the counting of EVM votes from 8:30 AM onwards. Updated round-wise data is being continuously reflected on ECINET and the official Election Commission of India (ECI) portal.

Tamil Nadu Election Results Update: DMK Leads Overall, CM Stalin Trailing

In Tamil Nadu, counting is being carried out across 75,064 polling stations at 62 designated centres. Early indications show the DMK maintaining a lead of over 50 seats. However, a notable development is Chief Minister MK Stalin trailing in his stronghold Kolathur.

Separately, actor-politician Vijay, contesting for the first time from Trichy, is also behind in early trends, according to ECI counting updates.

West Bengal Election Results Update: Mamata Banerjee Trailing, Narrow Edge for BJP in Early Counting Rounds

In West Bengal, early updates indicate a competitive fight between the BJP and the ruling Trinamool Congress. The BJP is currently ahead in around 33 seats, while the TMC is trailing closely with 28 seats. Early constituency-level movements have drawn attention, with Mamata Banerjee reportedly behind in Bhowanipore. At the same time, Suvendu Adhikari is leading in both Nandigram and his own seat, adding to the political significance of early trends.

Puducherry Election Results Trends: AIADMK Takes Lead in Oupalam

In the UT of Puducherry, early counting trends show the AIADMK leading in one constituency. Party candidate A. Anbalagan is currently ahead in Oupalam, with further rounds of counting expected to bring more clarity as the day progresses.
