Astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla made a triumphant return to India on August 17, 2025, after his groundbreaking mission to the International Space Station (ISS). Upon arrival at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, he was warmly welcomed by Union Minister Jitendra Singh, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan. His backup astronaut, Prashanth Balakrishnan Nair, also returned alongside him.
Mr. Shukla's journey to the ISS was part of NASA's Axiom-4 mission. The mission launched from Kennedy Space Centre in Florida on June 25 and docked at the ISS on June 26. During this time, Mr. Shukla collaborated with astronauts Peggy Whitson from the U.S., Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski from Poland, and Tibor Kapu from Hungary. Together, they conducted over 60 experiments and participated in 20 outreach sessions during their 18-day stay.

Celebrations and Future Plans
In anticipation of his return to India, Mr. Shukla expressed mixed emotions about leaving behind his friends and colleagues in the U.S. On Instagram, he shared a heartfelt message reflecting on his experiences and excitement about reuniting with family and friends back home. "As I sit on the plane to come back to India, I have a mix of emotions running through my heart," he wrote.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged Mr. Shukla's achievements during the Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort on August 15, 2025. He highlighted India's progress in space exploration and mentioned plans for developing an Indian space station. "Our Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla has returned from the space station," Mr. Modi stated.
Upcoming Events
Mr. Shukla is expected to meet Prime Minister Modi soon and visit his hometown Lucknow before returning to Delhi for National Space Day celebrations on August 22-23. His return marks a significant milestone for India's space ambitions as he continues to inspire future generations of scientists and astronauts.
Reflecting on his journey, Mr. Shukla quoted his commander Peggy Whitson: "The only constant in spaceflight is change." He added that this philosophy applies to life as well. His words resonate with many who follow their dreams despite challenges.
Before departing from the U.S., Mr. Shukla participated in Independence Day celebrations at the Indian Consulate in Houston with Prashanth Nair on August 15, 2025. This event further strengthened ties between India and its diaspora abroad while celebrating national pride.
The return of Mr. Shukla signifies not only personal achievement but also highlights India's growing presence in global space exploration efforts. As he shares his experiences with fellow citizens upon returning home, it serves as an inspiration for aspiring astronauts across India.
