US Imposes Sanctions on Atlantic Navigation for Involvement in Iranian Petroleum Trade

The United States has imposed sanctions on Atlantic Navigation OPC Private Limited, an Indian company, for its involvement in the trade of Iranian petroleum and petrochemicals. This action is part of broader sanctions targeting four entities and three vessels linked to Iran's oil trade, which significantly funds the Iranian regime, according to the US Department of Treasury.

US Sanctions Atlantic Navigation for Oil Trade

Iran's oil exports are facilitated by a network of illicit shipping operators across various jurisdictions. These operators use deception to load and transport Iranian oil to buyers in Asia. The State Department highlighted Atlantic Navigation OPC Private Limited's role as the ISM manager of the vessel VIGOR, involved in transporting Iranian petroleum.

Sanctions on Global Entities

In addition to Atlantic Navigation, other companies facing US sanctions include Shiny Sails Shipping Limited from Seychelles, Galaxy Management NV from Suriname, and Brecalin Hong Kong Company Limited. These companies are accused of engaging in transactions related to the purchase, sale, or marketing of Iranian petroleum products.

The Department of State also imposed sanctions on four entities involved in Iran's petroleum trade and identified six vessels as blocked property. The vessels include AVITAL under Cameroon's flag, VIGOR under Panama's flag, and several others flagged by Barbados and Panama.

Human Rights Violations

Furthermore, the Secretary of State determined that Ghezel Hesar Prison in Iran meets criteria under section 106 of the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA). This prison is accused of gross human rights violations against individuals exercising their right to freedom of expression.

Acting Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Bradley T Smith stated that Iran relies on a shadowy network of vessels and companies to finance its nuclear programme and support its proxies. "Iran continues to rely on its shadowy network of vessels, companies and facilitators to finance the development of its nuclear programme, the proliferation of its weapons systems and support to its proxies," he said.

The US Department of Treasury identified specific vessels linked to these sanctioned companies. The Cameroon-flagged AVITAL is associated with Shiny Sails Shipping Limited. The Panama-flagged VIGOR is linked to Galaxy Management NV. Brecalin Hong Kong Company Limited has interests in Barbados-flagged PROGRESS V and SCORPIUS, along with Panama-flagged TASCA and ELIZA II.

The sanctions aim to disrupt Iran's ability to generate revenue through its oil trade. By targeting these entities and vessels, the US seeks to hinder Iran's financial resources used for nuclear development and regional influence.
