At the recent Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Annual Business Summit, Wipro founder chairman Azim Premji shared his insights on the evolving ethical landscape of corporates in comparison to the past decades. Premji, renowned for his philanthropic efforts, expressed his firm belief in the heightened ethical standards of today's corporations, attributing this shift to cleaner governance and a stronger sense of corporate ethics.

Premji highlighted the role of younger entrepreneurs who have not only achieved professional success early in their careers but are also keenly aware of their societal responsibilities. According to him, this new generation is more inclined towards philanthropy, driven by a broader sense of ethics that surpasses that of their predecessors.
The tech industry veteran also touched upon the philanthropic practices of older generations within wealthy families, suggesting that the current generation might be resting on the laurels of their forefathers' generosity. This, he believes, has led to a complacency in increasing charitable contributions.
Emphasizing the importance of collective action, Premji called on companies to unite in their efforts to contribute positively to society. He stressed the need for businesses to look beyond established frameworks and address fundamental societal issues, thereby fulfilling their responsibilities towards workers and the community at large.
Premji also advocated for businesses to operate within an Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) and sustainability framework. He suggested a reevaluation of how Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) budgets are utilized, urging companies to focus on addressing core societal needs rather than merely fulfilling statutory obligations.
In conclusion, Premji's message at the CII Annual Business Summit was clear: businesses must acknowledge and embrace their extensive responsibilities towards society. By doing so, they can pave the way for a sustainable future, underpinned by ethical practices and a commitment to social welfare.
