Bangalore Parking May Get Costlier: Cars, SUVs and Bikes May Face New Fees Under Proposed Karnataka Rules

Bengaluru vehicle owners could soon have to pay for parking their private vehicles on residential roads if the Karnataka government's proposed parking rules come into effect. The Greater Bengaluru Area Parking Rules, 2026 have proposed annual parking permits for residents, with the fee going up to Rs 25,000 a year for SUVs.

The rules are currently only in draft form and have not been implemented. The Urban Development Department issued the draft notification on August 11, inviting residents, motorists, resident welfare associations and other stakeholders to submit their suggestions and objections. The consultation window will remain open for 30 days from the date of publication of the notification in the Gazette.

This means the proposed rates and other provisions could still be revised before the rules are notified in their final form.

The proposed annual residential parking permit would depend on the type of car. Owners of small cars could be charged Rs 15,000 per year, while the proposed fee for sedans is Rs 20,000. For SUVs, the annual charge has been set at Rs 25,000 in the draft.

The proposal is likely to have the biggest impact on households that do not have adequate private parking space and regularly leave vehicles on roads outside or near their homes.

For an SUV owner, the proposed annual charge of Rs 25,000 works out to roughly Rs 2,083 a month. Similarly, the Rs 15,000 annual fee for a small car comes to about Rs 1,250 a month.

However, these are proposed charges and should not be treated as an immediate expense for Bengaluru residents.

Bengaluru On-street Parking Rates for Cars and Two-Wheelers

The draft rules also propose an hourly pricing system for vehicles parked on public roads outside designated residential permit areas. The amount would depend on the category assigned to the road.

For cars, the proposed charge is Rs 80 per hour on Category A roads, Rs 60 on Category B roads and Rs 40 on Category C roads.

Two-wheeler owners would also have to pay for on-street parking under the proposal. The suggested rates are Rs 40 per hour on Category A roads, Rs 30 on Category B roads and Rs 20 on Category C roads.

Category A roads: Cars may be charged Rs 80 per hour, while two-wheelers may pay Rs 40 per hour.

Category B roads: The proposed rate is Rs 60 per hour for cars and Rs 30 per hour for two-wheelers.

Category C roads: Cars may have to pay Rs 40 per hour, while two-wheelers may be charged Rs 20 per hour.

Off-street parking: Cars may be charged between Rs 20 and Rs 40 per hour, while two-wheelers may pay Rs 10 to Rs 20 per hour.

Monthly off-street parking: The proposed monthly fee ranges from Rs 1,000 to Rs 4,000.
Night parking discount: A 50% discount on monthly parking rates has been proposed for vehicles parked between 8 pm and 8 am.
