Guru Purnima in 2025 celebrates teachers in India while banks remain open. Discover the July bank holiday schedule across various states, honouring regional traditions.
Today is Guru Purnima, a day dedicated to honouring teachers in India. However, banks will remain open as it is not a listed holiday this year. Typically, banks across the country, including the State Bank of India (SBI), observe holidays on the second and fourth Saturdays and all Sundays. In July, there are seven designated bank holidays.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and state governments compile a list of bank holidays considering national and local events, operational needs, religious festivals, and cultural observances. This information is shared via the central bank's official website and notifications to financial institutions.
Guru Purnima: A Day of Reverence
Guru Purnima is celebrated in India to honour spiritual guides and academic mentors. It underscores gratitude, reverence, wisdom, and knowledge. According to the Hindu lunar calendar, this festival falls on the full moon day (Purnima) in Ashadha (June-July). The day commemorates Maharishi Veda Vyasa's birth, who compiled the Mahabharata and is revered as a great spiritual teacher.
This festival also holds significance in Buddhism and Jainism. Buddhists commemorate Lord Buddha's first sermon at Sarnath after enlightenment on this day. Jains pay respects to Lord Mahavira and his chief disciple Gautam Swami during Guru Purnima.
July 2025 Bank Holidays: State-Specific Observances
