Bank Holiday 2025: Banks are closed in some cities of India due to New Year celebrations and local events. However, in India, bank holidays vary from state to state, and hence, not all banks are closed on public holidays across the country, in case it is a national holiday. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) decides holidays every month for scheduled commercial banks.
Bank Holiday On January 2:
As per the RBI's holiday list for January 2025, banks are closed in the cities of Aizawl and Gangtok due to the Loosong/Namsoong/New Year Celebration.
Loosong is a festival for the northeast city, of Sikkim, and marks Sikkimese New Year or Lepcha New Year.
Losoong marks the end of harvest season, of the Bhutia tribe, celebrated every year in December. It is a traditional festival of the Bhutias. It is a time when the farmers rejoice and celebrate their harvest. The Lepchas also celebrate it and call it Namsoong. It is celebrated by inviting friends and family with traditional gaiety and celebrations. The festival is preceded by masked dance at the Phodong and Rumtek Monasteries in Sikkim, as per Wikipedia.

Payment systems typically include Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS), National Electronic Fund Transfer (NEFT), Cheque Clearing operated by various Bankers' Clearing Houses in the country including the grid-based Cheque Truncation System (CTS) and ECS suite [Electronic Clearing Service (ECS), Regional Electronic Clearing Service (RECS) and National Electronic Clearing Service (NECS)] --- are likely to be closed on January 2nd in these cities.
What is opened? However, online bank services such as UPI, internet banking, mobile banking, and e-wallets are operated 24X7. Also, ATMs are opened.
Overall, in January 2025, there are a total of 8 special holidays due to key occasions. The banks will be closed on January 11th and 25th due to the second and fourth Saturdays. All banks are closed on all Sundays of the month. This time the national holiday Republic Day falls on Sunday.
For the month of January 2025, RBI has identified special holidays under two categories namely Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act; and Banks' Closing of Accounts.
Bank holidays in India 2025, vary from state-to-state and city-to-city, though there are numerous Public Holidays in the year 2025 which are applicable throughout the country. Some of these holidays include Republic Day (Jan 26), Independence Day (Aug 15) and Gandhi Jayanti (Oct 2). Apart from these, there are important religious and festival holidays such as Diwali, Dussehra, Christmas, Eid, Guru Nanak Jayanthi, Good Friday, Ganesh Chaturthi, Budh Purnima etc.
Also, banks are closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month in addition to the above-mentioned bank holidays. The fifth Saturday of a month with five Saturdays is a working day for banks. In the past, banks would only open for a half-day on Saturdays.
