January 26 is a nationwide bank holiday in India on account of Republic Day. All public sector and private sector banks across the country will remain closed on Monday, as Republic Day is observed as a compulsory holiday under the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday calendar.

With January 24 being the fourth Saturday and January 25 a Sunday, the holiday results in a three-day long weekend, impacting in-branch banking services across India.
Will Banks Be Closed Across All States on Jan 26?
Republic Day is a uniform national holiday, meaning bank branches in all states and union territories will remain shut on January 26. Unlike regional holidays that vary by state, this closure applies nationwide.
That said, certain states such as Tamil Nadu may observe additional local holidays around this period, including Netaji Jayanti on January 23 in select regions, but these do not affect the nationwide Republic Day closure on January 26.
Will ATMs and Online Banking Work on Republic Day?
Yes, ATMs and digital banking services will continue to function normally on January 26, 2026, despite physical bank branches being closed. The following services will remain available 24/7, UPI payments, Net banking and mobile banking apps, IMPS, NEFT, and RTGS transfers and ATM cash withdrawals and balance enquiries. Customers can continue to carry out most routine financial transactions without interruption.
While ATMs will remain operational nationwide, customers should be mindful that higher cash withdrawals during the long weekend could lead to temporary cash shortages, especially in high-traffic cities such as Chennai. To avoid inconvenience, banks advise withdrawing sufficient cash in advance.
What Banking Services Will Be Affected?
With branches closed on January 26, Cheque clearances will be paused, Loan processing and approvals may be delayed, In-branch services such as cash deposits, passbook updates, and document submissions will not be available
All pending transactions will resume when banks reopen on Tuesday, January 27. Customers are advised to complete urgent in-branch banking work before January 24. Rely on digital banking apps for transfers, bill payments, and account checks. Avoid issuing cheques close to the holiday, as clearing will resume only after January 26
This is especially important with Union Budget 2026 discussions around the corner, which may require timely financial planning.
