Bank Holidays 2025: The Indian Armed Forces (IAF) has launched 'OPERATION SINDOOR', hitting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, heightening the tensions between the two countries, which turned sour after the Pahalgam attack last month. Also, on May 7th, the Indian government is carrying out a nationwide civil defence mock drill as a measure of preparing citizens for war-like emergency blackouts, air raid sirens, public preparedness, and evacuation. Does that mean banks are closed on May 7?
Bank Holiday On May 7?
While there is no official statement from RBI or the government related to the holiday, however, banks in states and union territories like Rajasthan, Jammu Kashmir, Punjab and other states are likely to be closed due to them being border states.
Banks could be closed in areas of Assam due to the state conducting polls for Panchayat elections.
In the other cities, banks will be open.
Notably, the ATM services and other online banking transactions could be carried reportedly.

Operation SINDOOR:
In a notification on May 7, the Defence Ministry said, that a little while ago, the Indian Armed Forces launched 'OPERATION SINDOOR', hitting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir from where terrorist attacks against India have been planned and directed.
Altogether, nine (9) sites have been targeted. The ministry said, "Our actions have been focused, measured and non-escalatory. No Pakistani military facilities have been targeted. India has demonstrated considerable restraint in the selection of targets and method of execution."
"These steps come in the wake of the barbaric Pahalgam terrorist attack in which 25 Indians and one Nepali citizen were murdered. We are living up to the commitment that those responsible for this attack will be held accountable," it said.
Mock Drill:
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has directed up to 244 districts to participate in a mock drill on May 7. These 244 districts are categorized as civil defence districts of the country. In a notification, the MHA said the conduct of the exercise is planned up to the village level.
Overall, the civil defence mock drill aims to assess the operational efficiency and operational coordination of various civil defence measures. This is the first mock drill since the 1971 war between India and Pakistan.
Assam Panchayat Election 2025:
The state of Assam is organizing Panchayat Elections in two phases of May 2025. The second phase of poll will take place on May 7th. These elections are part of Assam Panchayat Raj Act, 1994, that allows the establishment of three-tier Panchayati Raj system in Assam, at village, intermediate and district level.
The state's Zilla Parishad has 420 respresentatives and 21 chairpersons. While the Anchalik Panchayat has 2,201 representatives and 185 states. Further, Gaon Panchayat has 24,222 representatives and 2,201 chairpersons.
