The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is in charge of deciding the bank holidays in India every year. Accordingly, the central bank has allowed a holiday on September 7, due to the onset of Ganesh Chaturthi 2024. However, the festival of Ganesha varies from state to state, and hence, not all bank branches will be closed on Saturday.
Here is the list of banks in cities which are closed and opened today:
Data from RBI showed that banks will be closed on the first Saturday of September due to Ganesh Chaturthi/Samvatsari (Chaturthi Paksha)/Varasiddhi Vinayaka Vrata/Vinayakar Chathurthi. This is excluded as a special holiday, since banks are in operation on the first and third Saturday of the month, and closed during the second and fourth Saturdays.
That being said, as per RBI's list, banks will be closed on September 7 in cities like Ahmedabad, Belapur, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Mumbai, Nagpur, and Panaji.
Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi or Vinayaka Chavithi or Vinayagar Chaturthi, is a Hindu festival that tributes the Hindu deity Ganesha. The festival is marked with the installation of Ganesha's clay murtis privately in homes and publicly on elaborate pandals, as per Wikipedia.
Accordingly, bank branches will remain open on September 7 in cities such as Agartala, Aizawl, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Gangtok, Guwahati, Imphal, Itanagar, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kochi, Kohima, Kolkata, Lucknow, New Delhi, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, Shimla, Srinagar, and Thiruvananthapuram.
In September 2024, banks will have a total of 17 non-working days including second and fourth Saturdays and five Sundays. There are ten special holidays in the month including occasions like Ganesh Chaturthi/Samvatsari, First Onam, Pang-Lhabsol, Milad-Un-Nabi, Friday following Eid-i-Milad-ul-Nabi, Sree Narayana Guru Samadhi Day, Birthday of Maharaja Hari Singh Ji, and General Elections to the State Legislative Assembly 2024.
RBI's holidays are divided into three categories such as -- Holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act; Holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act and Real Time Gross Settlement Holidays; and Banks' Closing of Accounts. Bank holidays in India 2024, vary from state-to-state and city-to-city.
A bank holiday in India is generally considered a public holiday when banks and other financial institutions remain closed. Not all public holidays are classified as Bank Holidays as it varies with state and region.
Hence, Bank holidays in India and for that matter, the public holidays are decided by the central government, the state government and the various union territories in the country. As per RBI, bank holidays are divided into three categories. These are holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act; holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act and Real Time Gross Settlement Holidays; and banks' closing of accounts.
