Bank Holiday Today (April 14) City-Wise List Of Bank Holidays For Ambedkar Jayanti, Biju, Puthandu, Baisakhi

Indian banks are closed on April 14 due to the celebration of a host of festivals. These include Ambedkar Jayanti, Maha Vishuva Sankranti, Biju, Buisu Festival, Puthandu, Bohag Bihu, Cheiraoba and Baisakhi. However, bank holidays vary from city to city.

Bank Holiday Today:

As per RBI's list, majority of banks are closed in India due to celebration of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Jayanti/Maha Vishuva Sankranti/Biju/Buisu Festival/Tamil New Year's Day/Bohag Bihu/Cheiraoba/Baisakhi.

Banks Closed Today:

Banks are closed in cities like Agartala, Ahmedabad, Aizawl, Belapur, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Guwahati, Gangtok, Hyderabad, Imphal, Itanagar, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Panaji, Patna, Ranchi, Shimla, Srinagar, Thiruvananthapuram, and Vijayawada.

Banks Open Today:

But banks are open in cities like Kohima, Raipur, and Shillong.

Ambedkar Jayanti 2026:

Indians across the world will be celebrating Ambedkar Jayanti in honour of birth anniversary of Dr B. R. Ambedkar, who was India's one key prominent figure. He was Indian jurist, economist, social reformer and politician who chaired the committee that drafted the Constitution of India. Not just that, he served as Law and Justice minister in the first cabinet set by then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

Ambedkar was beyond just economist, lawyer or professor. He fought for social freedom of Dalits, and he preached of education, righteous and the values of being responsible humans. India calls Babasaheb which means 'Respected Father'.

Biju 2026:

Biju, a colourful festival is celebrated by the Chakma community for 3 days, marking the dawn of a New Year for them.The festival is also celebrated by seven other ethnic groups in Tripura: Marma, Tangchangya, Tripuris, Mro, Khumi, Khiyang and Chak. The Marmas call the festival "Sangraig", Tangchangya refer to it as "Bishu", Truipis call it "Baisuk" and Ahmia name it "Bihu".Biju is an ancient pageant originally held to ensure the new agricultural season would end in a good harvest. Today it represents a chance to celebrate and showcase the rich cultural diversity of the Chakma people. The main aim of celebrating the festival is to create awareness about the culture and traditions of the Chakma community among the young generation, as per government's Utsav website.

Tamil New Year 2026 (Puthandu):

The auspicious new year of Tamil Nadu is going to be celebrated on April 14. This is called the Tamil New Year or also popularly known as Puthandu or Varusappirappu. Puthandu, which is referred to as the birth of the year, is one of the most important festivals for Tamils. Not just in India, but many countries such as Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Mauritius and Reunion also celebrate the occasion. The Tamil diaspora in Myanmar, South Africa, USA, the UK, Canada and Australia also follow the festival. This day is considered among the most auspicious days, as the belief is that Lord Indra descended on the earth to offer peace.

Baisakhi 2026:

Vaisakhi, also known as Baisakhi or Mesadi or Basoa, marks the first day of the month of Vaisakh and is traditionally celebrated annually on 13 April or 14 April. It is seen as a spring harvest celebration primarily in Punjab and Northern India. Whilst it is culturally significant in many parts of India as a festival of harvest, Vaisakhi is also the date for the Indian Solar New Year. However, Sikhs celebrate the new year on the first the month Chet, according to the Nanakshahi calendar, as per Wikipedia.

Banks will be closed on April 15 and April 16 as well due to celebration of Bengali New Year's Day (Nababarsha)/Bohag Bihu/Vishu/Himachal Day.
