Bank Holiday: Indian banks in a certain state of the country are closed on Wednesday, December 18, 2024. In India, banks have a unique holiday pattern, with second and fourth Saturdays along with all Sundays as default holidays. Apart from this, banks also have special occasions or festivals for bank holidays which are decided by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
Here's why banks are closed in this city on December 18:
As per the RBI's latest list, banks will be closed in the regions of Shillong, a hill station in northeast India and the capital of the state of Meghalaya. This is because of the Death Anniversary of U SoSo Tham.
U Soso Tham - born in 1873 in Sohra, or Cherrapunjee, Meghalaya, was a Khasi poet. He was the first poet to initiate secular literature with diction, both singular and genuine. He was also the first person to make use of Khasi idioms in a form taken mainly from English poetry. U Soso Tham is basically remembered for his beautiful poems. His "Ka Duitara Kshiar" (The Golden Harp, 1925) - a compilation of poems, is one of the most distinguished works, as per the Ok North East website.
Excluding Shillong and other regions of Meghalaya, banks are working as normal days in other parts of India.
Services like ATMs, internet banking, and mobile banking are accessible irrespective of bank holidays. What is closed during bank holidays? Visit to branches is not possible during bank holidays. Also, payment services or cash deposits or large transactions that require you to visit branches, will not be accessible.
Bank holidays in India, vary from state to state and city to city, though there are numerous Public Holidays in the year 2024 which are applicable throughout the country. Some of these holidays include Republic Day (Jan 26), Independence Day (Aug 15) and Gandhi Jayanti (Oct 2). Apart from these, there are important religious and festival holidays such as Diwali, Dussehra, Christmas, Eid, Guru Nanak Jayanthi, Good Friday, Ganesh Chaturthi, Budh Purnima etc.
Also, Banks are closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month in addition to the above-mentioned bank holidays. The fifth Saturday of a month with five Saturdays is a working day for banks. In the past, banks would only open for a half-day on Saturdays.
