Bank Holiday Today: SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Banks Closed on June 26 For Muharram; Which Banking Services Are Open?

Indian banks will be closed in several cities on Friday, June 26, 2026, due to the occasion of Muharram, which is also popularly called Ashura. This event is one of the holiest and most grieving days for Muslims across the world. However, this day holds different meanings for both Shia or Sunni muslims.

In India, bank holidays are decided by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) depending upon the national holidays, state-level holidays and festivals. Bank holidays sometimes collide with general public holidays but they vary from city to city.

Bank Holiday On June 26:

For Muharram (Yaom-EShahadath)/Last Day of Moharam/Ashura, banks will be closed in most cities of India.

Notably, banks will be closed in cities like Agartala, Aizawl, Belapur, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chennai, Hyderabad, Jammu, Kanpur Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Srinagar, and Vijayawada.

However, banks will also be opened in several other cities such as Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Guwahati, Gangtok, Imphal, Itanagar, Jaipur, Kochi, Kohima, Panaji, Shillong, Shimla, and Thiruvananthapuram.

Muharram 2026:

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar (also known as the Lunar or Hijri calendar). This 2021 Islamic calendar is based on 12 lunar months, the sighting of a new moon determines the start of a new month. Muharram marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year, so it's the perfect time to make resolutions and establish good habits like giving regular charity, so that you can gain blessings all-year round, as per Islamic Relief Canada Org.

Ashura 2026:

Ashura, also more formally Yawm Ashura, is a day of commemoration in Islam. It occurs annually on the tenth of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar. For Sunni Muslims, Ashura marks the parting of the Red Sea by Moses and the salvation of the Israelites, as per Wikipedia.

Which Banking Services Are Open Or Closed During Bank Holidays?

Branch services will not be available during any sort of bank holidays. These include:

1. Withdrawing or depositing cash over the counter at a bank branch.

2. You will not be able to open a new account or close an existing one which requires visit to the bank. You can do this on May June 16.

3. You will not be able to apply for loans or credit cards in person.

4. Also, you will not be able to update or apply for new passbook in person.

5. You will not be able to carry high worth transactions in India and remittance as they require you to visit the branches.

6. It needs to be noted that NEFT, IMPS and RTGS services carried online is available 24x7 irrespective of bank holiday or not. However, NEFT or RTGS requests made at bank branches will follow branch holiday schedules.

2. ATM services are available 24x7 as well.

3. You can view your balance, history of transactions, and pay bills seamlessly online.

4. Also, transfer or receiving of funds is available online.
