Eid Al Adha is among the state- and central-government-decided holidays in India for citizens. However, when it comes to banks, it is the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) who decides holidays. And RBI has fixed May 28th as the Bakra Eid holiday for the majority of cities in the country. It needs to be noted that Eid Al-Adha has been celebrated since May 27th and will continue till May 29th, depending upon regions and countries.
Bank Holiday Today:

On May 28, as per RBI's list, banks are closed in cities like Agartala, Ahmedabad, Aizawl, Belapur, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Hyderabad, Imphal, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kochi, Kohima, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Panaji, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, Shimla, Srinagar, Thiruvananthapuram, and Vijayawada.
However, banks in cities like Bhubaneswar, Gangtok, Itanagar, and Guwahati will stay open on May 28.
When there is bank holiday, all commercial banks are closed. These include, SBI, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Punjab National Bank, Bank of Baroda, Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Bank of India, Canara Bank, and other banks. These also include small finance banks, regional banks, corporate banks and foreign banks.
Eid Al Adha 2026:
Explaining in detail, the Islamic Relief Org stated that Eid al-Adha is one of the two blessed Eids that we celebrate as Muslims. It follows the end of the annual Hajj pilgrimage period, and is also known as the "Feast of Sacrifice".
The festival is performed with Eid prayer in the morning. Then, Muslims around the world come together to take part in Qurbani, reflecting the legacy of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and his unwavering obedience to Allah.
As per the explainer, qurbani commemorates the faith of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), who was willing to sacrifice his son Ismail (AS) in obedience to Allah's command. It provides a means for Muslims to reach the level of submission they showed to Allah.
Bank Holidays In May 2026:
Indian banks received a total of 12 days holiday in May 2026. Starting off with May 1st, the majority of scheduled commercial banks were closed due to the celebration of Maharashtra Din, Buddha Purnima and Labour Day. Apart from this, banks were closed for events and festivals like Birthday of Rabindranath Tagore, State Day, and Bakra Eid. Additionally, the month of May has five Saturdays, but banks were closed for the second and fourth Saturdays as per usual. Lastly, all Sundays will be bank holidays. What Is Opened Or Closed During Bank Holidays?
Branch services will not be available during any sort of bank holidays. These include:
1. Withdrawing or depositing cash over the counter at a bank branch.
2. You will not be able to open a new account or close an existing one which requires visit to the bank. You can do this on May 29.
3. You will not be able to apply for loans or credit cards in person.
4. Also, you will not be able to update or apply for new passbook in person.
5. You will not be able to carry high worth transactions in India and remittance as they require you to visit the branches.
6. It needs to be noted that NEFT, IMPS and RTGS services carried online is available 24x7 irrespective of bank holiday or not. However, NEFT or RTGS requests made at bank branches will follow branch holiday schedules.
