Is It A Bank Holiday Today? The confusion is brewing among Indians as we celebrate Valmiki Jatyanti today, Tuesday, October 7. All banks will remain shut in multiple regions across India on the occasion of Valmiki Jayanti, Kumar Purnima. As per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday calendar, banks are scheduled to remain shut for four days this week in multiple regions.
As people plan their bank visits for today, it is important to be aware of the bank holiday today in different regions across the country.
Valmiki Jayanti Holiday: Are Banks Closed Today, October 7, Tuesday?
Banks will remain closed today, Tuesday, on the occasion of Valmiki Jayanti and Kumar Purnima in Chandigarh, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, and Shimla regions. Two significant celebrations will coincide on October 7, ie, Maharshi Valmiki Jayanti and Kumar Purnima. Both events occur on the full moon day, known as Purnima, in the Hindu lunar month of Ashwin. Maharshi Valmiki Jayanti marks the birth anniversary of the revered sage Maharishi Valmiki, who authored the epic Ramayana.
According to the RBI holiday calendar, October 7 has been marked as a bank holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) determines holidays for banks under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. These holidays include public holidays, the second and fourth Saturdays of each month, as well as national, regional, and religious events.
This calendar applies to all banks across the country. Bank holidays can vary based on the state or region due to local festivals or events. While some holidays are observed nationwide, others are specific to certain areas. Customers need to be aware of these variations to plan their banking activities accordingly.

October Bank Holidays
Banks remained shut in the first week of October on several festive occasions, including Durga Puja, Dussehra, and Gandhi Jayanti. AS per the RBI calendar, there will be nearly 21 bank holidays in October, including those marked under the Negotiable Instruments Act.
Additionally, Shimla will see bank closures again on October 10 for Karva Chauth. This festival is primarily observed by married women who fast for their husbands' well-being. Outside these regions, banks will function normally across India.
On October 11, all banks nationwide will be closed as it falls on a second Saturday. According to RBI guidelines, banks do not operate on the second and fourth Saturdays each month. This routine closure allows employees a regular break while ensuring consistent service throughout other days.
Planning ahead is crucial during this period of frequent bank holidays. By checking local schedules and utilising online banking options, individuals can avoid disruptions in their financial activities during these festive times.
