Bank Holidays 2024: Indian banks have a unique holiday pattern on the weekend. They work two Saturdays and are closed on another two, while all Sundays are bank holidays. In a month with five Saturdays, they work three Saturdays then, while they are closed on the other two. So is Saturday, November 9, a bank holiday?
Saturday, November 9, 2024:
November 9th is the second Saturday of the month. Hence, banks across India will be closed today.
It needs to be noted that banks are open on the first and third Saturday of a month, and closed on second and fourth. In terms of five Saturdays in a month, banks will still only be closed on the second and fourth, while the rest of the Saturdays are working days.
As per RBI guidelines, payment systems will not be operated on second and fourth Saturdays but will operate for full days on working Saturdays. Payment systems typically include Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS), National Electronic Fund Transfer (NEFT), Cheque Clearing operated by various Bankers' Clearing Houses in the country including the grid-based Cheque Truncation System (CTS) and ECS suite [Electronic Clearing Service (ECS), Regional Electronic Clearing Service (RECS) and National Electronic Clearing Service (NECS)].
Also, processing of future value-dated transactions with value dates falling on second and fourth Saturdays will not be undertaken under the RTGS and ECS suite.
It is the RBI that decides on bank holidays every year. The holidays are divided into three categories such as -- Holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act; Holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act and Real Time Gross Settlement Holidays; and Banks' Closing of Accounts. Bank holidays in India 2024, vary from state-to-state and city-to-city.
India is a multi-cultural and very diverse country and also has many national and other bank holidays. A bank holiday in India is generally considered as a public holiday when banks and other financial institutions remain closed. While not all public holidays are classified as Bank Holidays as it varies with state and region.
Some of these holidays are very local and hence are decided by the respective state governments. On the other hand, some of them are very mandatory and it is not a prerogative of anybody as these are already the national holidays in India.
