Banks are in for a long weekend, packed with four consecutive day holidays starting from Friday, September 20 to Monday, September 23. However, not all banks will be closed across India, and in only a few cities. Any citizens who are planning to visit their bank's branch anytime between the mentioned date would like to check if their bank is open or not these days.
As per RBI, here are the list of banks to be opened and closed between September 20-23:
September 20:
According to RBI's holiday list for September 2024, there is a holiday on September 20 due to the occasion of Friday following Eid-i-Milad-ul-Nabi. However, on this day, banks will be closed only in Jammu and Srinagar.
That being said, banks will be opened in cities like Agartala, Ahmedabad, Aizawl, Belapur, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Gangtok, Guwahati, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Imphal, Itanagar, Jaipur, Kanpur, Kohima, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Panaji, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, Shimla, and Thiruvananthapuram.
September 21:
With September 21 being the third Saturday, banks are generally open. However, bank branches in some cities will be closed, due to the celebration of Sree Narayana Guru Samadhi Day.
The cities where banks will be closed are Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. Meanwhile, banks in other cities will continue to operate.
September 22:
Since September 22 falls on a Sunday which is by default a holiday for all banks in the country.
September 23:
Banks in Jammu and Srinagar will be closed due to the birthday of Maharaja Hari Singh Ji which will be celebrated on September 23.
Banks in other cities will be opened.
RBI's holidays are divided into three categories such as -- Holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act; Holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act and Real Time Gross Settlement Holidays; and Banks' Closing of Accounts. Bank holidays in India 2024, vary from state-to-state and city-to-city.

Also, Banks are closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month in addition to the above-mentioned bank holidays. The fifth Saturday of a month with five Saturdays is a working day for banks. In the past, banks would only open for a half-day on Saturdays.

A bank holiday in India is generally considered as a public holiday when banks and other financial institutions remain closed. While not all public holidays are classified as Bank Holidays as it varies with state and region.
