Bank Holidays 2025: Banks in India are set for a long weekend this week. On April 1, RBI has announced holiday in various cities due to banks closing of accounts for financial year 2024-25. Apart from this, banks are set for their first Saturday holiday this month. All Sundays are bank holidays.

In April 2025 month, there are ten special holidays for banks excluding the second and fourth Saturdays and all Sundays. Bank holidays are decided by RBI. The central bank's holidays are divided into categories like 'Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act' and 'Banks' Closing of Accounts'.

Bank Holidays On April 1:

As per RBI's holiday list, on April 1st, banks are closed in cities like Agartala, Ahmedabad, Belapur, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Gangtok, Guwahati, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Imphal, Itanagar, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kochi, Kolkata, Kohima, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Panaji, Patna, Ranchi, Srinagar, and Thiruvananthapuram.

However, bank branches will remain open in cities like Shillong, Shimla, Raipur, and Aizawl.

Banks closing of accounts means the closure of a financial year, which currently is closing 2024-25 fiscal. Generally, the closing of accounts is an important process for banks to update their records, close their assets and liabilities for a respective financial year, calculate their incomes, and many other financial transactions. Also, the closing of accounts is a process to begin fresh for a new financial year, which in this case, will be for 2025-26.

The closing of accounts impacts states and union territories eventually. However, this holiday will not be applicable to regions like Meghalaya, Chhattisgarh, Mizoram, West Bengal, and Himachal Pradesh, and hence, banks are open here owing to regional variations in the holiday list.

Major banks like HDFC Bank, SBI, Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, ICICI Bank, Bank of Baroda, Punjab National Bank, Canara Bank, Union Bank of India, IndusInd Bank, RBL Bank, Federal Bank, and others will observe closing of accounts holiday on April 1 in the above-mentioned cities.

Bank Holidays On April 5:

April 5th is the first Saturday of the current month, and as per guidelines of RBI, all banks are to carry normal operations on such Saturday. However, in city of Telangana, banks will be closed on April 5 due to celebration of Babu Jagjivan Ram's Birthday.

Banks will be opened in other cities. Generally, weekend holidays of banks including second and fourth Saturdays, and all Sundays. If there are five Saturdays in a month, then the fifth Saturday also becomes a working day.

Since banks will be closed in Telangana on first Saturday, payment systems will not be operated onsecond and fourth Saturdays but would operate for full day on working Saturdays. Payment systems typically includes Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS), National Electronic Fund Transfer (NEFT), Cheque Clearing operated by various Bankers' Clearing Houses in the country including the grid based Cheque Truncation System (CTS) and ECS suite [Electronic Clearing Service (ECS), Regional Electronic Clearing Service (RECS) and National Electronic Clearing Service (NECS)].

Who is Babu Jagjivan Ram?

Jagjivan Ram (5 April 1908 - 6 July 1986), popularly known as Babuji, was an Indian independence activist and politician who served as a minister with various portfolios for over 30 years, making him the longest-serving Union Cabinet minister in Indian history.
