Bank Holiday 2025: Banks in India have a unique weekend holiday. They are closed on the second and fourth Saturdays, while they work on the rest of the Saturdays of the month. Apart from this, banks enjoy all Sundays as a holiday. In May, there are a total of six special holidays excluding Saturdays. Check out dates and when banks are closed next.
Bank Holiday on May 17:
May 17th is the Saturday of the current month. However, it is neither the second or fourth Saturday. Hence, all banks in India are open on May 17th.
According to the guidelines of RBI, all scheduled and non-scheduled banks - public, private, foreign, cooperative, regional rural and local area banks - will observe public holidays on the second and fourth Saturdays from September 01, 2015; and will observe full working days on Saturdays other than the second and fourth Saturdays.
If there are five Saturdays in a month, then the fifth Saturday is also a working day.
Since banks are opened on May 17, payment systems that require visits to bank branches are available. These typically include Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS), National Electronic Fund Transfer (NEFT), Cheque Clearing operated by various Bankers' Clearing Houses in the country including the grid-based Cheque Truncation System (CTS) and ECS suite [Electronic Clearing Service (ECS), Regional Electronic Clearing Service (RECS) and National Electronic Clearing Service (NECS)].
Banks are closed on May 18 due to the Sunday weekend holiday.
Going ahead, banks will observe two holidays next week, however, no special holidays.
Bank Holiday on May 24:
All banks will be closed next week on May 14th because it's a fourth Saturday. Hence, the above payment systems will not be available on this day. Foreign banks also adhere to second and fourth Saturday holidays apart from the public and private sectors.
Although bank branches are closed on second and fourth Saturday, customers can still access digital banking services including mobile banking, internet banking, and ATMs for transactions on holidays.
Banks will be closed on May 25 due to Sunday.
It is RBI that decides bank holidays for every month under two categories namely the Negotiable Instruments Act and Banks' Closing of Accounts.
Bank holidays in India 2025, vary from state-to-state and city-to-city, though there are numerous Public Holidays in the year 2025 which are applicable throughout the country. Some of these holidays include Republic Day (Jan 26), Independence Day (Aug 15) and Gandhi Jayanti (Oct 2). Apart from these, there are important religious and festival holidays such as Diwali, Dussehra, Christmas, Eid, Guru Nanak Jayanthi, Good Friday, Ganesh Chaturthi, Budh Purnima etc.
Some of these holidays are very local and hence are decided by the respective state governments. On the other hand, some of them are very mandatory and it is not a prerogative of anybody as these are already the national holidays in India. Common holidays which central government decide would be Good Friday, Christmas, and Diwali among others.
