Bank Holidays 2025: Banks Will Be Closed For 3 Days From April 29 To May 1: Akshaya Tritiya To Maharashtra Day

Bank Holidays 2025: Indian-scheduled commercial banks are in for a long holiday week. This week, banks will be closed for three consecutive days starting from April 29th to May 1st. Several occasions and festivals are queued on these days, such as Bhagavan Shri Parshuram Jayanti, Basava Jayanti, Akshaya Tritiya, Maharashtra Day and Workers Day. However, these bank holidays vary from state to state. Hence, check out the list of bank holidays during these days on a city-wide level.

Bank Holiday On April 29:

According to RBI's list, banks will be closed on April 29 due to Bhagvan Shri Parshuram Jayanti. Banks will be closed in the Shimla region.

Bank Holiday On April 30:

Bank branches will be closed on April 30th due to Basava Jayanti and Akshaya Tritiya. Southern cities like Bengaluru will observe the bank holiday.

Bank Holiday On May 1:

Banks will be closed on Maharashtra Day and May Day in cities like Belapur, Bengaluru, Chennai, Guwahati, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Imphal, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Nagpur, Panaji, Patna, and Thiruvananthapuram.

The central bank, aka RBI, decides bank holidays every month. However, bank holidays depend on state and central zones. In April and May 2025, these holidays fall under two categories namely negotiable Instruments Act and the Banks' Closing of Accounts of RBI.

Here are the details of the festivals and special occasions for which banks are closed:

1. Bhagvan Shri Parshuram Jayanti 2025:

Parshuram Jayanti is celebrated across India as the appearance day of Lord Parshuram and is usually observed during Tritiya, the third day waxing moon in the month of Vaishaka which falls between April-May period. Noteworthily, Parshuram was said to be the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This year, Parshuram Jayanti will be celebrated on April 29, commemorating the birth of Parshuram Bhagwan. He got his name due to the usage of Parshu (an axe) to kill all the Kshatriyas on earth. In simple words, Parshuram means the bearer of an axe.

2. Basava Jayanti 2025:

Meanwhile, the Basava Jayanthi is celebrated to honour Mahatma Basaveshwar, a famous Philosopher, Statesman, Social Reformer, and Saint in the Shaivism Bhakti Movement during the 12th Century. It is observed on the third of the bright half or Shukla paksha during the month of Vaisakha. Jagat Jyoti Basaveshwara was a well-known saint who worked tirelessly to spread social awareness among people with his poetry and philosophy. His main teachings included gender equality, social reforms, eradication of social discrimination, clarification of superstition, and unnecessary rituals. The 12th Century had witnessed these ideas from anyone and therefore the new teachings by Basaveshwara on these social issues made him quite popular among several people who later became his followers, as per Karnataka Tourism website.

Basava Jayanti will be celebrated on April 30.

3. Akshaya Tritiya 2025;

Akshaya Tritiya, also popularly known as Akti or Akha Teej, is an annual Jain and Hindu spring festival all over India. The festival usually appears during the third tithi (lunar day) of the bright half (Shukla Paksha) of the Hindu month of Vaisakha. During this auspicious day, devotees make new investment, buy rice, deposit money to the bank, and not just that there is huge demand for gold too. Also, this day is auspicious to women either be married or unmarried, who pray for the well-being and blessing for the men in their lives. Generally, devotees distribute fruits, sweets and germinating gram (sprouts) after offering prayers.

In 2025, Akshaya Tritiya is going to be celebrated on April 30.

4. Maharashtra Day 2025:

Maharashtra Day, commonly known as Maharashtra Din is a state holiday in the Indian state of Maharashtra, commemorating the formation of the state of Maharashtra in India from the division of the Bombay State on 1 May 1960. Maharashtra Day is commonly associated with parades and political speeches and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events celebrating the history and traditions of Maharashtra. It is celebrated to commemorate the creation of a Marathi-speaking state of Maharashtra, as per Wikipedia.

5. Labour Day 2025:

May Day, day commemorating the historic struggles and gains made by workers and the labour movement, observed in many countries on May 1. In the United States and Canada a similar observance, known as Labor Day, occurs on the first Monday of September, as per Britannica.
