Bank Holidays 2025: Indian banks are in for a very long holiday period due to back-to-back festivals right from Ambedkar Jayanti to Good Friday. There are many state-origin festivals such as Vishu, Tamil New Year, Bohag Bihu, Pohela Boisakh, and Garia Puja as well. Hence, bank holidays will vary from city to city in India. In the country, RBI decides on bank holidays on a monthly, and yearly basis.
Bank Holidays 2025:
April 14 Holiday:
Banks will be closed on Monday, April 14, due to the celebration of Ambedkar Jayanti, Vishu, Biju, Buisu Festival, Maha Vishuva Sankranti, Tamil New Year's Day, Bohag Bihu, and Cheiraoba.
On April 14, the cities where bank branches are closed are --- Agartala, Ahmedabad, Aizawl, Belapur, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Gangtok, Guwahati, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Imphal, Itanagar, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Panaji, Patna, Ranchi, Srinagar, and Thiruvananthapuram.
April 15 Holiday:
Banks will be closed due to Bengali New Year's Day/Himachal Day/Bohag Bihu. Cities where banks will be closed are Agartala, Guwahati, Itanagar, Kolkata, and Shimla on April 15.
April 16 Holiday:
On this day, banks will be closed due to Bohag Bihu. Bank branches will be closed only in the Guwahati region on April 16.
April 18 Holiday:
Due to Good Friday, banks will be closed in cities like Ahmedabad, Aizawl, Belapur, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Gangtok, Dehradun, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Imphal, Itanagar, Kanpur, Kochi, Kohima, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Panaji, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, and Thiruvananthapuram.
April 20 Holiday:
April 20th falls on Sunday, which is a default holiday for all banks across the country.
April 21 Holiday:
On the occasion of Garia Puja, banks will be closed in Agartala.
Banks will be operational as normal on April 17th and on the third Saturday of the month, which is April 19th.

1. Ambedkar Jayanti 2025:
April 14th is celebrated as the birthday of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, who was a pivotal figure during the British era, fighting for equality, poverty and social reforms. He was born on April 14, 1891, and this day is called as 'Equality Day' by many cities in India.
2. Vishu 2025:
Mesha Sankranthi is celebrated as Vishu in the Indian state of Kerala. Vishu is not traditionally celebrated as New Year in the Malayalam Calendar. In the Malayalam Calendar, the New Year starts on the first day of Chingam. However people in the Malabar area consider Vishu as the astrological New Year. Vishu is celebrated with much fanfare and vigour in all parts of Kerala. The most important event in Vishu is the Vishukkani, as per Drik Panchang.
3. Biju 2025:
Biju, a colourful festival is celebrated by the Chakma community for 3 days, marking the dawn of a New Year for them. The festival is also celebrated by seven other ethnic groups in Tripura: Marma, Tangchangya, Tripuris, Mro, Khumi, Khiyang and Chak. The Marmas call the festival "Sangraig", Tangchangya refers to it as "Bishu", Truipis call it "Baisuk" and Ahmia names it "Bihu". Biju is an ancient pageant originally held to ensure the new agricultural season would end with a good harvest, as per Utsav India, as per a government website.
4. Maha Vishuva Sankranti 2025:
Maha Vishuva Sankranti is an important festival for Hindus and Buddhists in the state of Orissa , marking the beginning of the new year. It is also known as Pan Sankranti. This day is celebrated on the first day of the traditional month of Aries in the solar calendar. According to the Gregorian calendar, this day falls on 14 April, as per Wikipedia.
5. Tamil New Year 2025:
Celebrated usually on April 14, as per Gregorian calendar, the Tamil New Year is usually celebrated on the first day of the traditional Tamil calendar. It is a public holiday in both Tamil Nadu and even neighbouring country, Sri Lanka. Not just that, the day is celebrated as the traditional new year in states such as Assam, West Bengal, Kerala, Tripura, Bihar, Odisha, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana. Other countries like Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Sri Lanka also celebrate the same day as their new year. This day is celebrated with lights and family gathering, wearing new clothes and visiting holy temples to seek blessings and pray for a prosperous new year.
6. Pohela Boisakh 2025:
Pohela Boisakh is called as Bengali New Year, which will be celebrated on April 15th this year. Bengali devotees across the global celebrate this festival, which marks the first day of new year under Bengali calendar which is also popular referred as Bangabda. The festival reflects spring harvest.
7. Himachal Day 2025:
On April 15th, the citizens of Himachal Pradesh celebrate Himachal Day as the state was created as province of India on this day.
8. Bohag Bihu 2025:
Bohag Bihu, a key festival of Northeastern Indian state of Assam and other parts of that region, usually appears during the time of harvest. This year, the festival will be celebrated on April 15 and April 16, however, will vary from region to region.
9. Good Friday 2025:
Good Friday, the Friday before Easter, the day on which Christians annually observe the commemoration of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. From the early days of Christianity, Good Friday was observed as a day of sorrow, penance, and fasting, a characteristic that finds expression in the German word Karfreitag ("Sorrowful Friday"), as per Britannica.
10. Garia Puja 2025:
A bamboo pole that symbolizes the Lord Garia, the deity of livestock and wealth, is worshipped with flowers and garland. The main ingredients with which the Garia Puja is conducted are cotton thread, rice, riccha, fowl chick, rice beer, wine, earthen pots, eggs and wine, highlighted by Tripura Tourism.
