Bank holidays 2025: Indian banks are up for a long-holiday week from May 5th to 11th. Special occasions such as Panchayat Election, Birthday of Rabindranath Tagore, and Buddha Pournima are queued in the coming days, and banks will be closed for four whopping days accordingly. Bank Holiday On May 7:
Banks will be closed in Guwahati for Panchayat election in Assam. That being said, banks will be opened in rest of India.
Bank Holiday On May 9:
On this day, banks will be closed in cities like Kolkata due to celebration of birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore. In other states, banks are opened.
Bank Holiday On May 10:
All banks will be closed because May 10th falls on the second Saturday.
Bank Holiday On May 11:
Since May 11th is a Sunday, all banks in India will be closed because it's a default holiday.
Bank Holiday On May 12:
On Monday, May 12th, banks will be closed in cities like Agartala, Aizawl, Belapur, Bhopal, Dehradun, Itanagar, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Raipur, Ranchi, Shimla, and Srinagar. The holiday is to celebrate Buddha Purnima.

1. 2025 Assam Panchayat elections:
The state of Assam is organizing Panchayat Elections in two phases of May 2025. The second phase of poll will take place on May 7th. These elections are part of Assam Panchayat Raj Act, 1994, that allows the establishment of three-tier Panchayati Raj system in Assam, at village, intermediate and district level.
The state's Zilla Parishad has 420 respresentatives and 21 chairpersons. While the Anchalik Panchayat has 2,201 representatives and 185 states. Further, Gaon Panchayat has 24,222 representatives and 2,201 chairpersons.
2. Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti 2025:
Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti, also popularly known as Rabindra Jayanti, is an annually celebrated cultural festival, prevalent among Tagorephiles (people who love Tagore and his works) around the world, in remembrance of Rabindranath Tagore's birthday anniversary. Throughout the globe, Tagore's birth anniversary is largely celebrated at Santiniketan, Birbhum in West Bengal, chiefly in Visva-Bharati University, the institution founded by Tagore himself for the cultural, social and educational upliftment of the students as well as the society, as per Wikipedia.
3. Second Saturday Bank Holiday:
Since September 2015, all scheduled and non-scheduled banks - public, private, foreign, cooperative, regional rural and local area banks - will observe public holiday on second and fourth Saturdays, as per RBI's guidelines.
Payment systems will not be operated on second and fourth Saturdays but would operate for full day on working Saturdays. Payment systems typically includes Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS), National Electronic Fund Transfer (NEFT), Cheque Clearing operated by various Bankers' Clearing Houses in the country including the grid based Cheque Truncation System (CTS) and ECS suite [Electronic Clearing Service (ECS), Regional Electronic Clearing Service (RECS) and National Electronic Clearing Service (NECS)].
Buddha Purnima 2025:
Buddha's Birthday or Buddha Day (also known as Buddha Jayanti, Buddha Purnima, and Buddha Pournami) is a primarily Buddhist festival that is celebrated in most of South, Southeast and East Asia, commemorating the birth of the prince Siddhartha Gautama, who became the Gautama Buddha and founded Buddhism.
