Bank Holiday 2025: Indian banks will be closed in certain cities of India due to the celebration of Maharashtra Day and Labor Day on Thursday, May 1. From Bengaluru, Mumbai to Thiruvananthapuram, banks are declared to be shut by RBI on this auspicious day. It needs to be noted that not all Indian banks are on holiday on May 1st. Bank Holiday On May 1, 2025:
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) usually decides all bank holidays for India on a monthly and yearly basis. With May month kickstarted, the first holiday falls on May 1st due to Maharashtra Day and Labor Day which is also popularly called May Day.
On May 1st, cities where banks are closed are --- Belapur, Bengaluru, Chennai, Guwahati, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Imphal, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Nagpur, Panaji, Patna, and Thiruvananthapuram.
Cities where banks are opened are --- Agartala, Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Gangtok, Itanagar, Jammu, Jaipur, Kanpur, Lucknow, New Delhi, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, Shimla, and Srinagar.
Maharashtra Day 2025;
Maharashtra Day, commonly known as Maharashtra Din is a state holiday in the Indian state of Maharashtra, commemorating the formation of the state of Maharashtra in India from the division of the Bombay State on 1 May 1960. Maharashtra Day is commonly associated with parades political speeches and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events celebrating the history and traditions of Maharashtra. It is celebrated to commemorate the creation of a Marathi-speaking state of Maharashtra, as per Wikipedia.
Labor Day 2025:
May Day, the day commemorating the historic struggles and gains made by workers and the labour movement, is observed in many countries on May 1. In the United States and Canada a similar observance, known as Labor Day, occurs on the first Monday of September, as per Britannica.
Bank Holidays May 2025:
In total, there are seven special holidays scheduled in May month for banks. These holidays fall under the category of the Negotiable Instruments Act and Banks' Closing of Accounts. These holidays exclude the second and fourth Saturdays and all Sundays of the month.
Banks will be closed on May 1st for Maharashtra Din/May Day (Labor Day), followed by a holiday on May 7th due to Panchayat Election 2025. Also, banks will be closed on May 9th for the Birthday of Rabindranath Tagore, while they will be closed on May 12th for Buddha Pournima.
In the second half of the May month, banks will be closed on May 16th for State Day, on May 26th for the Birthday of Kazi Nazrul Islam, and on May 29th for Maharana Pratap Jayanti.
The second and fourth Saturday holidays will fall on May 10th and May 31st. While banks will be closed on May 4th, 11th, 18th and 15th for Sundays.
