Banks are in for a long weekend during the Diwali festival of 2024. The celebration of Dhanteras on October 29, Tuesday, is the first day of Diwali season. Schools and public holidays are at full swing, and eventually, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has also announced key holidays for Indian banks.
October 29, 2024:
Diwali is a five-day celebration in India; however, before that, the country celebrates Dhanteras, which will be held on October 31.
Dhanteras is celebrated on the thirteenth lunar day (Trayodashi) of Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the Hindu calendar month of Ashvin (according to the amānta tradition) or Kartika (according to the purnimanta tradition), as per Wikipedia.
The majority of Indians will celebrate Choti Diwali or Naraka Chaturdashi on this day. However, banks will continue to be opened on Wednesday.
October 31, 2024:
Banks' main holiday for Diwali season will kick start from this day. However, not every city will have bank holidays.
As per RBI's holiday list for October 2024, on October 31, banks will be closed in cities like Ahmedabad, Aizawl , Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Itanagar, Itanagar, Kanpur, Kochi, Kohima, Kolkata, Lucknow, New Delhi, Panaji, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Shimla, and Thiruvananthapuram.
Hence, banks will be opened in cities like Agartala, Belapur, Dehradun, Gangtok, Imphal, Jammu, Mumbai, Nagpur, Shillong, and Srinagar.
On this day, the Chaturdashi Tithi which will begin at 1:15 pm on October 30, will end on October 3:52 pm on October 31. While October 31 will also see the commencement of Abhyang Snan Muhurat which will begin from 5:20 AM to 6:32 AM on Wednesday.
Apart from the Kali Puja, or Chaturdashi, the day will also be celebrated as Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's Birthday.
November 1, 2024:
Banks will be closed in some cities on November 1st, which is the occasion of Diwali Amavasya (Laxmi Pujan)/Deepawali/Kut/Kannada Rajyothsava.
The cities in which banks will be closed are - Agartala, Belapur, Bengaluru, Dehradun, Gangtok, Imphal, Jammu, Mumbai, Nagpur, Shillong, and Srinagar. The rest of the cities, banks will be operational on Friday.
November 2, 2024:
Banks will be closed on this day due to celebration of Diwali (Bali Pratipada)/Balipadyami/Laxmi Puja (Deepawali)/Govardhan Pooja/Vikram Samvant New Year Day.
This is the first Saturday of November 2024, and it is in general terms a working day for banks. However, because of the above-mentioned occasions, banks will be closed in cities like Ahmedabad, Belapur, Bengaluru, Dehradun, Gangtok, Jaipur, Kanpur, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Nagpur on Saturday.
Banks in remaining cities are opened.
November 2, 2024:
All banks in India will be closed on November 2 since the day falls on Sunday which is a default bank holiday.
This is also the last day of the Diwali festival will be celebrated as Bhai Dooj.
It is the RBI that decides on bank holidays every year. The holidays are divided into three categories such as -- Holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act; Holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act and Real Time Gross Settlement Holidays; and Banks' Closing of Accounts. Bank holidays in India 2024, vary from state-to-state and city-to-city.
In general terms, banks are closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month in addition to the above-mentioned bank holidays. The fifth Saturday of a month with five Saturdays is a working day for banks. In the past, banks would only open for a half-day on Saturdays.
