Bank Holiday 2025: The month of August brings with it the festival season, as a lot of festivals, including Raksha Bandhan, Janmashtami, Independence Day & more, are being celebrated. Bank customers across India should prepare for multiple public holidays in advance that could impact their financial transactions. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has released the official list of bank holidays in August.
This week, between August 11 and August 17, 2025, several bank holidays are scheduled across different states, in addition to the standard weekend days off on Saturdays and Sundays.
The RBI, in coordination with state governments, prepares the annual bank holiday calendar under the Negotiable Instruments Act, balancing national events, religious festivals, and local traditions. While some bank holidays are mandatory nationwide, others are state-specific depending on cultural significance.

Bank Holidays This Week: August 11 to 17
August 13, Wednesday: Patriot's Day will be celebrated in Imphal, Manipur.
August 15, Friday: Nationwide closure for Independence Day; also marks Parsi New Year (Shahenshahi) and Janmashtami (Smarta) in various regions.
August 16, Saturday: Bank holiday in states including Gujarat, Mizoram, Madhya Pradesh, UT Chandigarh, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Telangana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Meghalaya, Jammu & Kashmir, and Andhra Pradesh for Janmashtami and Krishna Jayanthi. This also counts as the fourth Saturday holiday nationwide.
August 17, Sunday: All banks across India closed for the weekly Sunday holiday.
Major National Holiday in August 2025
The one date when all banks in India will remain closed nationwide is August 15, Independence Day, as it is the national holiday in India. Other dates are either regional or based on religious observances in specific states.
List Of All Bank Holidays in August 2025
The month of August has a total of 15 public holidays, including all Sundays, August 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31; the second and fourth Saturdays, August 9, 23 & 30; and the official RBI bank holidays nationwide.
August 8, Friday: Tendong Lho Rum Faat in Sikkim and Odisha.
August 9, Saturday: Raksha Bandhan and Jhulana Purnima in Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh; also the second Saturday bank holiday nationwide.
August 13, Wednesday: Patriots' Day in Manipur.
August 15, Friday: Independence Day (national bank holiday across India); also Parsi New Year (Shahenshahi) and Janmashtami in select regions.
August 16, Saturday: Janmashtami in Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and other states; also a fourth Saturday RBI holiday in several states.
August 25, Monday: Tirubhav Tithi of Srimanta Sankardeva in Assam (Guwahati).
August 27, Wednesday: Ganesh Chaturthi in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and other states.
August 28, Thursday: Second day of Ganesh Chaturthi and Nuakhai in Odisha and Goa.
What Transactions Are Possible When Banks Are Closed?
Even during bank holidays, customers can access:
- ATM withdrawals for cash needs.
- Internet banking and mobile banking for fund transfers and bill payments.
- UPI services for instant transactions.
However, certain services under the Negotiable Instruments Act, such as cheque clearing, will not be available on these bank holidays. If you need in-person banking services, it's best to plan ahead and check with your local branch about their holiday schedule. Long weekends around Independence Day and Janmashtami may also cause delays in cheque clearance or loan disbursements.
