Bank Holidays This Week: Banks Are Closed For Four Days From November 18-November 24, 2024; Check Dates

Bank Holidays: Banks in India will have yet another holiday-driven week from November 18 to November 24, 2024. Banks in a few cities were already closed on November 18 due to Kanakadasa Jayanti. In the coming days, banks will be closed for three more days this week, including a long weekend with a fourth Saturday holiday. Check dates and cities:

November 18, Monday:

As per RBI's list for holidays, banks were closed on Monday, November 18 due to Kanakadasa Jayanti. However, since this is a state holiday, not all banks were closed in India. Banks were closed in only one city and that is Bengaluru. Rest in other cities, banks operated as a normal day.

November 20, Wednesday:

Banks will be closed in the cities of Belapur, Mumbai, and Nagpur due to the Assembly General Election, 2024 in Maharashtra.

A General assembly election is scheduled to be held in Maharashtra on 20 November 2024 to elect the 288 members of the 15th Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, the counting and the results will be declared on 23 November 2024, as per Wikipedia.

November 19, 21, 22nd:

Banks will be opened across the country on these three days as there are no special occasions or events.

November 23, Saturday:

Banks will be closed on Saturday, November 23 for two reasons. Firstly, banks will be closed in Shillong due to the Seng Kutsnem occasion. All banks in India will be closed as it is the fourth Saturday.

As per RBI's guidelines, all scheduled and non-scheduled banks - public, private, foreign, cooperative, regional rural and local area banks - will observe public holidays on second and fourth Saturdays from September 01, 2015; and will observe full working days on Saturdays other than second and fourth Saturdays.

Since its a fourth Saturday, access to payment systems like Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS), National Electronic Fund Transfer (NEFT), and Cheque Clearing operated by various Bankers' Clearing Houses in the country including the grid-based Cheque Truncation System (CTS) and ECS suite [Electronic Clearing Service (ECS), Regional Electronic Clearing Service (RECS) and National Electronic Clearing Service (NECS)] - will be closed.

The Banking Departments in Regional Offices of the Reserve Bank will remain open for the full day on working Saturdays as required to support the functioning of the Financial Markets and the Payment Systems. Government business will be transacted at agency banks on working Saturdays, as per RBI's guidelines.

November 24, Sunday:

All banks in India will be closed on Sunday as it is the default holiday.

It is RBI that decides the holidays of Indian banks. Apart from second and fourth Saturdays, RBI identifies special occasions as holidays under three categories namely - Holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act; Holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act and Real Time Gross Settlement Holidays; and Banks' Closing of Accounts. These special holidays are in most cases public holidays and national holidays.

Notably, bank holidays vary from state to state, so not all banks need to be closed on public holidays across India. But on national holidays like Independence Day, Republic Day, or Gandhi Jayanti, all banks are compulsorily closed across India irrespective of state or city. National holidays are generally fixed and practised by every state.
