Bank Strike Postponed: Are SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Other Banks Open? Will September Salary Get Credit On Sept-30?

The 3-day bank strike has been postponed from September 28th to September 30th, giving much-needed relief to both customers and banks. The decision was made after a high-level committee meeting was formed between the United Forum of Bank Unions and the Indian Banks Association. Both have eventually discussed key demands like the five-day working week, the unilateral PLI scheme, and modifications in the framework, along with long-pending residual issues. Amidst this, it is important to note whether banks are open between these three days, and since month-end is falling this week, will employees get their September 2026 salary in time?

Bank Strike Postponed

Initially, the UFBU, which claims to represent 90% of the banking employees in India, had called for a three-day strike from September 28th to September 30th. UFBU, along with six other unions, had already carried out a nationwide protest on September 11th.

They also threatened to carry out an indefinite strike from October 26th, 2026.

They demands were ---- implementation of the agreed five-day banking, keeping the unilateral PLI scheme in abeyance, bilateral modification of the PLI framework, and settlement of the long-pending residual issues.

However, after considering the progress achieved and the commitments emerging from the discussions, UFBU has decided to defer the proposed agitational programs and strike actions. The decision is a deferment in the light of positive developments. The All India Bank Officers Confederation said," it is not an abandonment of our demands."

Bank Strike News: Are Banks Open Or Closed?

All banks such as SBI, Punjab National Bank, Union Bank of India, Canara Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, Bank of Baroda, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, IndusInd Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank among others are operating as normal.

There are 11 PSU banks and all of their branches across the country are open from September 28-30.

Also, 28 regional rural banks will continue to be operation across the country as well. These include Andhra Pradesh Grameena Bank, Arunachal Pradesh Rural Bank, Assam Gramin Bank, Bihar Gramin Bank, Chhattisgarh Gramin Bank, Gujarat Gramin Bank, Haryana Gramin Bank, Himachal Pradesh Gramin Bank, Jammu and Kashmir Grameen Bank, Jharkhand Gramin Bank, Karnataka Grameena Bank, Kerala Grameena Bank, Madhya Pradesh Gramin Bank, Maharashtra Gramin Bank, Manipur Rural Bank, Meghalaya Rural Bank, Mizoram Rural Bank, Nagaland Rural Bank, Odisha Grameen Bank, Puducherry Grama Bank, Punjab Gramin Bank, Rajasthan Gramin Bank, Tamil Nadu Grama Bank, Telangana Grameena Bank, Tripura Gramin Bank, Uttar Pradesh Gramin Bank, Uttarakhand Gramin Bank, and West Bengal Gramin Bank.

Also, co-operative banks will continue to operate as normal from September 28-30. In India, there are 1,450 Urban Cooperative Banks (UCBs), 34 State Cooperative Banks (StCBs) and 351 District Central Cooperative Banks (DCCBs).

Furthermore, 21 private sector banks like Axis, HDFC, ICICI, Bandhan Bank, Federal Bank, IDFC First Bank, IDBI Bank, City Union Bank, Dhanalaxmi Bank, DCB, Kotak, Karur Vysya, Karnataka Bank, and RBL Bank along with their branches across states will stay operational.

Not just that 12 small finance banks like AU SFB, Equitas, Jana, ESAF, Ujjivan, Unity and others will also function as normal.

Bank Strike News: Will Your Salary Be Delayed?

The monthly salary depends upon your employer's payment arrangements and the banks involved in the matter. The majority of salaried individuals receive their monthly payment through digital banking. There could be some delay in the processing due to heavy transaction traffic at month-end, but digital banking services are expected to be not impacted by any strike or whatsoever.

Some employers who pay salary through cheque will also not be impacted, as bank branches will be operational as normal. So you can visit your bank's branch to get your salary cheque cleared.

However, some companies usually prefer to credit salary on the first of every month. So most likely, you may receive your pay on October 1st and as of now there are no hindrances.
