Bank Strike Today, September 11: Nationwide Strike Begins; Check Which Banking Services Will Be Affected
Banks across India may see disruptions at branches today, Friday, September 11, 2026, as the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has called a nationwide strike over several long-pending employee demands. The main issues include the implementation of a five-day banking week, changes to the performance-linked incentive (PLI) system and various pension-related concerns.
Bank Strike Today, September 11: Which Banking Services Will Be Affected?
The strike could have a bigger impact on public sector banks because employee and officer unions have a strong presence across these institutions. While customers may continue to use digital banking services, branch-based transactions and other physical banking work could be affected in areas where employees participate in the strike.

The UFBU is an umbrella organisation representing nine bank employees' and officers' unions. The forum finalised its protest program at a meeting on August 23, 2026, after expressing dissatisfaction with the response received on its key demands.
The five-day banking week remains one of the biggest issues behind the strike. Bank unions have been seeking a system under which all Saturdays would be holidays. According to the unions, an agreement reached in March 2024 provided for this arrangement, with employees agreeing to work an additional 40 minutes from Monday to Friday to adjust working hours.
The proposal was subsequently recommended to the Finance Ministry for approval, but unions say the change has still not been implemented. This has added to frustration among employees, who argue that the issue has remained pending despite the earlier agreement.
Performance-linked incentive, or PLI, is another major point of disagreement between bank unions and authorities. The unions have raised objections to the PLI structure prescribed by the Department of Financial Services, describing it as unilateral and discriminatory. They have particularly questioned the way incentives could differ between groups of employees.
According to the unions' argument, incentives for 5% of the workforce could cost substantially more than the combined incentive paid to the remaining 95%. They have also objected to the PLI structure applicable to officers in Scale IV and above.
The unions maintain that PLI should be linked to the overall performance of individual banks and should follow a uniform framework for employees and officers up to Scale VII.
Bank Strike Today: Which Services Could Be Affected?
The strike is mainly expected to affect physical banking operations. Customers visiting branches may face disruption in services such as cash deposits and withdrawals, passbook updates, cheque-related work, locker access, KYC-related services, pension documentation and certain loan-related activities.
Back-office operations and clearing-related support could also be affected where bank employees participate in the strike. Customers requiring demand drafts, branch approvals or other paperwork-dependent services may therefore experience delays.
However, a bank strike does not necessarily mean that every banking service will stop. UPI payments, mobile banking, internet banking and ATM services are generally expected to remain available, subject to normal technical issues and cash availability. Customers can therefore continue using digital channels for routine payments and transfers.
ATM cash availability could vary depending on replenishment and local conditions, particularly if physical banking operations are disrupted for an extended period.
Bank Strikes in September 2026
The September 11 action is not the only strike announced by the UFBU. The banking unions have also called a three-day nationwide strike from September 28 to September 30, 2026. The timing could be significant because these dates fall around the half-yearly closing period, when banks generally handle increased reconciliation, reporting and closing-related work.
