All public and private banks in Meghalaya, including the State Bank of India (SBI), are closed today, Thursday, July 17, to observe the death anniversary of U Tirot Singh, a revered freedom fighter and tribal leader from the Khasi Hills.
Who was U Tirot Singh?
U Tirot Singh is remembered as a brave leader who stood up against British colonial rule in the 19th century. He led the Khasi resistance during the Anglo-Khasi War (1829-1833), which broke out after he revoked his earlier permission for the British to build a road through the Khasi Hills.
Singh and his men fought valiantly despite being poorly equipped compared to the British forces. He was eventually captured and died in a prison in Dhaka on July 17, 1835. Since then, this day has been observed in Meghalaya to honour his legacy.

What will be Open And Closed?
This is a regional holiday declared under the Negotiable Instruments Act by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), which governs services involving cheques, promissory notes, and other financial instruments.
Due to this holiday, in-branch services in Meghalaya such as, Cash withdrawals at the counter, Cheque deposits and Issuance of demand drafts will not be available.
However, customers can still carry out essential banking activities through ATMs, mobile banking apps, and online banking platforms. These services remain fully functional.
Banking operations in the rest of India are unaffected, and branches in other states are open as usual.
Upcoming Bank Holidays in July
The RBI has listed a total of 13 bank holidays for July 2025, including weekends, regional festivals, and observances like today's. Here are the remaining key dates for holiday in July:
• July 19 (Saturday) - Banks closed in Agartala for Ker Puja, a traditional festival in Tripura.
• July 20 (Sunday) - Pan-India Sunday holiday.
• July 26 (Saturday) - Fourth Saturday, banks closed nationwide.
• July 28 (Monday) - Banks closed in Gangtok for Drukpa Tshe-zi, a Buddhist festival marking Buddha's first sermon.
Why Regional Holidays Are Important?
It is important to have love and respect for everyone across the country. Bank holidays in India vary from state to state, reflecting the country's rich cultural diversity. These holidays are determined by the RBI and respective state governments based on religious festivals, local customs, and historical events.
While pan-India holidays apply nationwide, regional holidays like today's in Meghalaya affect only local branches.
Planning Ahead
Customers are advised to stay informed about regional bank holidays to avoid any disruption in financial planning, especially during long weekends. It is recommended to complete important in-branch transactions in advance and rely on digital banking tools during such closures.
For the latest updates, users can visit the RBI website or contact their local branch directly.
