Basava Jayanthi 2025: Banks Holiday in Karnataka Today as State Celebrates Basavanna’s Legacy, Significance

Banks across Karnataka are closed today in observance of Basava Jayanthi, a public holiday that marks the birth of Basavanna, the 12th-century philosopher and social reformer. While banking operations will be on hold due to holiday, services such as ATMs, mobile banking, UPI, and internet banking will remain available in Karnataka despite branch closures.

Basava Jayanthi is celebrated with great devotion in Karnataka, especially in the northern districts like Bidar, Bagalkot, Belagavi, and Kalaburagi. Devotees participate in temple visits, religious prayers, processions, and cultural programs to honour Basavanna's teachings and legacy. Government offices, schools, and communities organise events that highlight his contributions to Indian society.

Significance of Basava Jayanthi in Karnataka

Basavanna, also called Basaveshwara, started the Lingayat movement in Karnataka. He lived during the Kalyani Chalukya period and worked to remove caste discrimination and promote equality and honesty. He asked people to follow the path of devotion to Lord Shiva and live a simple and truthful life. His ideas were written in Vachanas-short poems in Kannada that many still read and follow today.

The day is special not only for religious reasons but also for promoting social harmony and unity. It is widely celebrated across Karnataka and by the Lingayat community. The day is marked by community service, spiritual gatherings, and remembering Basavanna's call for harmony and equality. It is one of the most respected days in the Kannada calendar and is especially significant to the Lingayat community.

Basava Jayanthi 2025: Celebration in Parliament for First Time

For the first time, Basava Jayanthi is being celebrated in the Indian Parliament. A special event is being held at the Parliament House in New Delhi, where Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla is offering floral tributes to Basavanna's statue. Union Ministers including Nirmala Sitharaman, Prahlad Joshi, H.D. Kumaraswamy, Shobha Karandlaje, and others are attending the event. This celebration reflects the national importance of Basavanna's teachings beyond Karnataka.

Basava Jayanthi and Akshaya Tritiya on April 30

This year, Akshaya Tritiya, another major Hindu festival, falls on the same day-April 30, 2025. The festival began on the evening of April 29 at 5:31 PM and will continue until 2:12 PM on April 30, with the most auspicious puja muhurat between 5:41 AM and 12:18 PM on April 30, according to Drik Panchang. Akshaya Tritiya is considered an ideal day for buying gold, starting new ventures, and making investments. The jewellery markets across India, including in Karnataka, see a huge rise in footfall.

Though banks are closed for the day in Karnataka, customers can continue to use all digital channels for their financial needs. People are encouraged to check with their individual banks for any location-specific updates. Services like UPI, mobile banking, and ATMs are fully operational, so basic transactions can still be managed without visiting a branch.
