Bengal Urges Companies to Leverage MSME Potential for Enhanced Defence Production

The MSME sector in West Bengal is poised to significantly enhance production for the defence industry, according to a senior state official. At a recent Defence MSME Manufacturing Forum meeting, Rajesh Pandey, Principal Secretary of the Department of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Textiles, highlighted the state's 90 lakh MSMEs. He encouraged companies to advocate for these units in West Bengal.

Bengal Calls for MSME Support in Defence

Focus on MSME Growth

Pandey emphasised that 99% of these MSMEs are micro units, which can substantially contribute to defence production. The Ministry of Defence's policy now encourages MSMEs, including start-ups, to engage more actively in the defence sector. This policy shift presents a significant opportunity for West Bengal's MSMEs to manufacture diverse defence products and engage in research and development.

West Bengal hosts one of the largest leather parks in India and is developing a Rubber Park alongside several industrial parks. These facilities provide a robust infrastructure for MSMEs to thrive. Pandey urged potential investors and experts to engage with state officials to discuss how government incentives and infrastructure can support their projects.

Opportunities for Collaboration

Pandey invited stakeholders to participate in discussions with state officials to explore project proposals and identify how they can benefit from government support. He noted that a high-powered committee reviews new projects every 15 days to ensure timely commissioning and monitoring.

The forum also saw participation from senior representatives of prominent organisations like GRSE, Bharat Dynamics Ltd, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, Aerospace Engineers Pvt Ltd, and Titagarh Rail Systems Limited. Their presence underscores the collaborative efforts between public and private sectors in advancing the state's defence production capabilities.

The state's focus on new projects and timely commissioning reflects its commitment to fostering an environment conducive to growth in the defence sector. By leveraging its extensive network of MSMEs, West Bengal aims to play a crucial role in meeting the country's defence production needs.
