Bengaluru latest News: A shocking news has emerged from the Bengaluru airport where Bengaluru Customs officials arrested a visually impaired man smuggling gold worth more than Rs 3 crore at Kempegowda International Airport on March 4, 2025. The arrest came just a day after Kannada actress Ranya Rao was caught smuggling 17 gold bars worth a staggering Rs 12.56 crore, raising serious concerns about a gold smuggling racket operating through Bengaluru Airport.
Gold Smuggling at Bengaluru Airport
Bengaluru Customs officials acted very quickly on a tip-off and arrested a visually impaired passenger arriving from Dubai, only to discover nearly 4 kg of illegal gold. The authorities confirmed the seizure in a post on X stating that 3,995.22 grams of concealed gold was hidden under his shirt, which revealed yet another case of gold smuggling at Kempegowda International Airport this month. With the Bengaluru gold smuggling case making headlines, officials are intensifying efforts to crack down on gold smuggling routes originating from Dubai to India.

Ranya Rao Gold Smuggling Case
The incident follows the dramatic arrest of Kannada actress Ranya Rao on March 3rd 2025, who was caught with 17 gold bars hidden on her body. Authorities revealed that Ranya Rao had traveled to Dubai 27 times in six months, allegedly receiving Rs 4-5 lakh per kilogram of smuggled gold as per reports from Financial Express. The Ranya Rao gold smuggling case has raised questions about the nexus between celebrities and gold smugglers. After the back to back gold smuggling cases, the authorities at Kempegowda International Airport have tightened security measures, particularly for VIP passengers and high connection influential individuals.
Karnataka Government Tightens VIP Protocol After Smuggling Case
In response to the Bengaluru gold smuggling , the Karnataka government has revised its VIP protocol policies. As per the latest directive, only senior bureaucrats will retain VIP privileges, while family members and acquaintances will no longer receive special treatment at airports, Times of India Reported. The Ranya Rao gold case has led to significant security policy changes, as authorities seek to curb the misuse of VIP access for illegal activities.
Rising Gold Smuggling in India
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and Bengaluru Customs officials are now focusing on busting gold smuggling syndicates operating from Dubai to India. Recent cases, including gold seizures at Mumbai Airport, Delhi Airport, and Chennai Airport, highlight how gold smugglers are using news improved methods to cross the security checks without being caught.
Since India is one of the largest consumers of gold, gold smuggling rackets continue to exploit loopholes in the system. The Bengaluru Airport gold seizure case is a wake-up call for authorities to intensify airport security measures and prevent further illegal gold imports into India.
