Bengaluru Announces 3-Day Water Supply Disruption For Essential Maintenance; Check Dates

Bengaluru is preparing for a significant water supply disruption as the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has announced a three-day shutdown of Cauvery water supply. This will occur from September 15 to 17, affecting various parts of the city. The interruption is necessary to perform critical maintenance work at several pumping stations under the Cauvery Water Supply Project.

Dr. V. Ram Prasath Manohar, BWSSB Chairman, stated that operations at major pumping stations will be halted to conduct essential repairs. This maintenance aims to enhance the reliability and efficiency of Bengaluru's drinking water network. Officials emphasize that this work is vital for ensuring uninterrupted water supply in the long run.

Maintenance Schedule and Impact

The official schedule indicates that Cauvery Stage V pumping stations will be shut down for 60 hours, starting at 1:00 am on September 15 and ending at 1:00 pm on September 17. Additionally, Cauvery Stages I, II, III, and IV (Phase 1 and Phase 2) will cease operations for 24 hours from 6:00 am on September 16 to 6:00 am on September 17.

Residents in affected areas are urged by BWSSB to store sufficient water beforehand and use it wisely during the shutdown. Authorities have advised citizens to prepare for a complete halt in supply and plan for drinking, cooking, and other domestic needs in advance.

Future Expansion Plans

Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar recently discussed the state government's broader strategy to extend Cauvery water distribution to more regions. At a Janaspandana programme in Kodihalli, he mentioned plans to pump Cauvery water from near Sangama to 250 villages in Kanakapura taluk. He also noted that water is being sourced from Shimsha to Sathanur Hobli. Tanks in Kasaba Hobli and Hosadurga areas are being filled with water from the Arkavathi and Cauvery rivers as part of this initiative.
