After 13 years in the United States (U.S.), a tech professional is now thinking about relocating to Bengaluru for "semi-retirement" in order to take a break from his demanding work schedule. He wants to spend more time with his family since, at 39, he feels like he is burning out. He is hoping to go to India with his wife and three kids, and he has a big monthly income of 3.5 lakh to rent a large flat.
The tech professional shared his ideas on Reddit, explaining that after years of hard work, he now wants to take a break from the daily grind. He can escape work-related stress, long commutes, and corporate culture adaptations in India because he has a passive income source that guarantees financial security. He values his health and spending time with his family, even though he knows it will be expensive to leave behind a lucrative position in the U.S.

He keeps Bengaluru is his top relocation destination, especially the Varthur neighbourhood, where his brother lives. Since his parents would also be living with him, he is eager to rent a 4BHK or larger flat, preferably a 5BHK. Although he prefers Varthur because it is close to his family, he is open to other surrounding locations. He has also thought about Pune and Hyderabad as possible substitutes.
However, he is concerned about the relocation, particularly how his family will adjust. His wife is white, and his children have a foreign appearance, raising concerns about possible bullying in schools or society. He is looking for insights from others who have had similar experiences, in order to better grasp the hurdles and how accepting Indian communities may be to his family's unique situation.
He is seeking advice on the best places to live, housing possibilities, and general expat or returnee family experiences in India as he makes this significant life transition. Online conversations have been triggered by his narrative, and many others have shared their thoughts on work-life balance, cultural adaption in Indian metro cities, and semi-retirement.
How are People Responding to Techie's Bengaluru Relocation Plan?
The techie's desire to semi-retire in India received a wide spectrum of responses online. Some proposed alternative options, with one individual recounting the story of an IIT graduate who left a high-paying career to live in the United States countryside. Instead of going to India, he picked a lower-stress career that would allow him to spend more time with his family, such as climbing and rafting, without burning out.
Others expressed concerns about the obstacles of relocating with a white husband and mixed-race children. One reader warned that returning might not be a smart decision for the family, pointing out that living away for so long may have made them naive of how terrible the situation could be.
While the techie's suggestion first appeared interesting, another user expressed similar concerns, stating that his wife and kids could find it difficult to adjust due to cultural differences. With the advantages of living on 200 acres of picturesque land with clean water, high-speed internet, and fresh air, one commentator recommended leaving the job and relocating to the Midwest. They highlighted the wealth of outdoor pursuits, including hiking, fishing, hunting, kayaking, bicycling, and skiing, as well as the top-notch homeschooling opportunities.
However, some highlighted Bengaluru's benefits, pointing out that many foreigners and mixed-race couples have established prosperous lives there. They highlighted how the city is a good and comfortable place to raise a family because it has multinational communities and prestigious institutions like Indus and Canadian multinational School.
