Ganesh Chaturthi preparation in Bengaluru is in full swing as markets can be seen crowded with people rushing to make festive-related purchases like fruits, flowers, and other puja requirements. While these shops are seeing a huge footfall, firecracker shops are awaiting customers. Firecrackers have been a part of festival celebrations for a very long time, be it Diwali, Dussehra, Ganesh Chaturthi, etc. People often burst firecrackers to express joy. Despite the festive spirit, firecracker sales in Bengaluru are going flat this season.

Firecracker Regulations in Bengaluru
In Bengaluru, firecracker usage is not entirely banned but is highly regulated by the authorities. The Karnataka government emphasises the use of eco-friendly green crackers to reduce pollution and noise.
Some of the major rules include:
- Firecrackers are permitted only between 8 PM and 10 PM during festivals.
- Only green crackers complying with pollution and noise norms can be sold or burst.
- Sale and storage of firecrackers require official permits, and violators will face fines or criminal charges.
These restrictions have been put forward to ensure public safety and minimise environmental impact during festivals such as Ganesh Chaturthi.
Low Firecracker Demand Amid Safety Concerns
"We are seeing very little demand this season even though Ganesh Chaturthi is just a day away. Our sales are still low," said a shopkeeper of Harsha Trader, a small firecracker shop in HSR Layout.
In recent years, safety and environmental concerns have led authorities in many cities to ban or restrict firecrackers, especially during Ganesha idol immersion processions and public pandals. For instance, Visakhapatnam and Shivamogga prohibit firecrackers during immersion events to avoid fire hazards and noise pollution. Fire safety regulations also advise against bursting crackers near temporary structures like pandals.
Impact on Firecracker Business
According to local shopkeepers, the impact of restrictions and urban living arrangements on Firecracker business cannot be ignored.
"Most of our annual revenue, around 80%, comes from Diwali sales. Since Ganesh Chaturthi, sales have been relatively slow, though we also see some demand during New Year and Holi. Due to the ban, people living in flats are refraining from buying, as they don't have space for bursting crackers, whereas this isn't an issue for independent houses. Demand for firecrackers is steady at the moment, and we are expecting a surge during Visarjan over the next 10 days," said Supreeth K. Shankar of Sri Shivananda Firecracker Stores in Hosapallya, HSR Layout.
Ganesh Chaturthi Celebrations In Bengaluru
Ganesh Chaturthi in Bengaluru is celebrated with great enthusiasm. One can find puja pandals in every nook and corner of the city. One of the very famous temples in Koramangala 5th Block, Sri Prasanna Ganapati Temple, situated near KBHP colony, sees a massive crowd for daily pujas and special events during the festival. Many other neighbourhoods in Bengaluru, including Basavanagudi, Malleshwaram, Jayanagar, and Rajajinagar, host large public Ganesh Chaturthi pandals.
