Bengaluru Claims Top Spot for Startup Jobs in India, Securing 31% Share

Living up to its reputation as the IT capital, Bengaluru has emerged as the leading city for startup hiring in India, according to a recent study by Foundit (formerly Monster APAC & ME), a prominent talent platform. The Foundit Insights Tracker (FIT), covering the period from April 2023 to April 2024, highlights the dynamic landscape of startup employment across the country.

Bengaluru Tops Startup Hiring

The report reveals that Bengaluru accounts for a 31% share of startup job opportunities, outpacing Delhi with 23% and Mumbai with 18%. In contrast, Hyderabad and Chennai are at the lower end of the spectrum, each securing only a 5% share. Despite maintaining its top position, Bengaluru experienced a slight decrease in startup hiring, dropping 2% from the previous year's figure of 33%.

Another significant finding from the study is the decline in remote working opportunities, which fell from 8% in 2023 to just 3% in 2024. This shift indicates a changing landscape in employment practices within the startup ecosystem.

Startups are increasingly focusing on hiring freshers with 0 to 3 years of experience, which constitutes 53% of all job openings. Sekhar Garisa, CEO of Foundit, emphasized the importance of this trend: "Startups are increasingly leaning towards recruiting fresh talent, with over half of their job postings targeted at newcomers. In this market, young professionals should differentiate themselves by picking up relevant skills and not solely rely on their professional degrees."

The report also sheds light on the broader expansion of India's startup ecosystem beyond metropolitan areas into non-metro locations, marking them as emerging entrepreneurial hubs. This diversification is poised to significantly contribute to India's ambition of becoming a global manufacturing powerhouse. The production and manufacturing sector alone has seen a remarkable 31% year-on-year increase in hiring.

Sector-Specific Growth

Amidst a heatwave, there has been a notable surge in demand for home appliances, leading to a 27% year-on-year growth in the sector. This increase has prompted companies to swiftly adapt their inventory, distribution, and hiring strategies to cater to consumer demand effectively.

The tourism industry is also experiencing robust growth, with job opportunities rising by 23% year-on-year. However, while startups show a strong preference for hiring freshers, the overall job market has only seen a marginal increase of 1% in demand for this demographic. On the other hand, there's an increasing demand for seasoned professionals; those with more than 15 years of experience saw an 11% increase in hiring rates. Similarly, mid-senior-level professionals with 7 to 10 years of experience witnessed a monthly growth rate of 7%.

This comprehensive analysis by Foundit offers valuable insights into India's evolving job market within the startup ecosystem. It highlights not only the geographical shifts in startup hiring patterns but also underscores the sectors experiencing significant growth and the changing dynamics of remote work. As India continues to foster its entrepreneurial spirit, these trends are crucial for understanding both current opportunities and future directions.
