Bengaluru Strike Tomorrow: Why Small Shops and Street Vendors Are Shutting Down Across the City On June 18?

Thousands of small businesses across Bengaluru are expected to be closed on Thursday, June 18, as reportedly more than 58,000 bakery owners, beeda shop operators, and street vendors have called for an indefinite strike, due to alleged harassment by officials from many government departments.

Bengaluru Strike Tomorrow

The Bengaluru strike tomorrow is expected to impact customers across the city, with roadside carts, bakeries, beeda shops, and many small businesses may be shut until further notice.

Why Are Bengaluru Traders Going on Strike?

In a press conference, Ravi Shetty Baindoor, state president of the Karnataka Rajya Karmika Parishat, said thta, "the strike has been called in protest against what they describe as frequent inspections, excessive penalties, and intimidation by officials from multiple government departments.

Small business owners say that despite operating legally and paying taxes, they continue to face repeated inspections and enforcement actions that are affecting their livelihoods.

The traders are demanding that the Karnataka government introduce clear regulatory guidelines and ensure fair treatment for small businesses. They have warned that the indefinite strike will continue until the government intervenes and addresses their concerns.

Over 58,000 Businesses Expected to Participate

Organisers estimate that more than 58,000 businesses across Bengaluru will join the protest, including bakeries, beeda shops, tea stalls, roadside vendors, and other small retail outlets.

The shutdown is likely to affect thousands of residents who rely on neighbourhood bakeries, tea shops, snack outlets, and roadside vendors for daily essentials and meals.

Customers may find several popular bakeries, beeda shops, and street food stalls closed throughout the day if the strike sees huge participation.

The latest protest is a result of growing tensions between Bengaluru's informal trading community and civic authorities.

In recent weeks, street vendors performed demonstrations at Freedom Park against a proposed vending policy that includes dedicated vending zones and mandatory identity cards. At the same time, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has carried out eviction drives in areas including Church Street, leading to further discomfort among traders.
