Bengaluru Traffic Woes: Parents in Varthur-Gunjur Struggle With Poor Roads and 2 Hr Long School Commutes

The already infamous Varthur-Gunjur stretch in East Bengaluru is once again in the spotlight after another round of complaints from residents who are struggling in their daily commute.

A viral social media post shows the reality of daily life on one of the city's most congested corridors.

Parents in the area say a routine school commute has turned into a two-hour ordeal for a distance that should take minutes due to bad roads and roads and traffic mismanagement.

The frustration has also spilled onto social media, an X user wrote: "This is Varthur Main Road, Bangalore. A major route used by thousands of people and school kids every day, connecting several societies in the area to Whitefield. For many years, the road has been in terrible condition with huge potholes, loose gravel, dust, broken streetlights and poor maintenance. And when it rains, it gets even worse."

He added, "A simple question to the Bengaluru municipality, why has a major road used by thousands every day been ignored for so long?"

A parent whose daughter's school bus took two hours to cover just two kilometres on the same stretch.

In a X post that has since gone viral, the parent wrote: "I work hard. My wife and I pay lakhs in taxes every month. We took a huge home loan mainly so we could live close to our daughter's school and give her a safer, easier childhood. And yet, this is what '2 km from school' means here."

"We have seen a school bus topple, a woman suffer serious injuries after a fall, a biker almost lost his life after falling because of a pothole, and many more incidents that never become headlines." He added, "We are not activists. We are not fighting for a political party. We are parents, employees, families and taxpayers asking for one basic thing: Please give our children a safe road to come home on."

Even after authorities have announced fixing that area no major changes have been seen so far the main problem is the halted bridge project near Muthasandra which is pending government approval, along with delays in the Karnataka Road Development Corporation Limited's (KRDCL) flyover and road-widening plans

Residents along that area have requested the government to fix the entire Varthur, Gunjur and Sarjapur road network rather than piecemeal repairs.
