Bangalore Water Tariff Hike: Bengaluru residents are set to face yet another financial burden as the Karnataka government contemplates a water price hike. After the recent milk price hike and metro fare hike, the cost of piped water supplied by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) may also see a rise. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced on Friday that the government is considering a water tariff hike by one paise per liter, which, if implemented, will be the first revision in nearly 11 years, as the last water price hike took place in 2014.
Water Bills to Surge by Rs. 400-500 Per Month
According to a TOI report, households in Bengaluru may see their monthly water bills rise by Rs.400 to Rs.500 due to the proposed hike. The BWSSB had initially sought an increase of 7 to 8 paise per liter to offset operational losses. However, Shivakumar stated," The proposed hike was excessive, and the government is now considering a more moderate increase of one paise per liter. The final decision will be made after discussions with MLAs from the city." Shivakumar was quoted by TOI.

Why is the Water Tariff Being Increased?
Bengaluru has not witnessed any revision in water tariffs or hikes since 2014, despite rising costs in infrastructure and maintenance. The BWSSB, responsible for supplying piped water to the city, has been operating at a loss due to increasing expenses. The board had proposed a steeper water price hike to balance its finances, but the government has opted for a smaller increment.
Deputy CM's Statement on Water Tariff Hike in Bengaluru
Deputy CM DK Shivakumar responded to concerns raised by Congress MLC Ramoji Gowda regarding the urgent need to supply Cauvery water to more households, especially with summer approaching. "Water tariffs in Bengaluru have not been revised since 2014. BWSSB has proposed a hike of 7-8 paise per liter. But I have told them that is too much. The government is contemplating a one paise hike per liter. We will discuss this with MLAs from the city before making a final decision," he said, as per ANI.
Impact on Bengaluru Residents
The proposed water tariff hike in Bengaluru will add to the financial strain on residents, who are already dealing with increased costs of living. The recent hikes in milk prices and metro fares have already burdened households, and this additional expense may create further concerns for citizens. The government is expected to finalize its decision on the water tariff hike after consultations with city MLAs. While the increase is necessary to sustain BWSSB's operations, authorities are balancing affordability for consumers with the need to cover growing infrastructure costs.
